Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has announced that Brisbane-based artist Daniel McKewen will be the 2014 Artist in Residence, presenting his video work Running Men (2008–14) in the hotel’s Soirée Bar from 11th March until 31st May.

In McKewen’s Running Men, Tom Cruise is indefatigable. So too is Cary Grant and a cast of other iconic male actors, including Daniel Craig as James Bond. Across three screens, the actors appear in endless loops, running towards the camera, towards the viewer, ever pursued but never caught.

This year will also see McKewen participate as an artist in the 19th Biennale of Sydney, Australia’s largest and most exciting unnamed (6)contemporary visual art festival. Held every two years across multiple venues in Sydney, the Biennale is a three-month exhibition (21 March to 9 June 2014), offering a program of artist talks, forums, guided tours and family days, all free to the public.

As Sydney’s hotel of the arts, Sofitel has proudly supported the event as official accommodation partner since 2006. Sofitel Sydney Wentworth General Manager Erkin Aytekin said the hotel was excited to partner with the Biennale once again and collaborate on the presentation of the Artist in Residence program, which is now in its third year.

“As such long-running supporters of the Biennale, we are delighted to take our commitment to the next level,” he said. “We were looking at innovative ways to animate our Biennale partnership, and the idea of collaborating on our Artist in Residence program seemed a simple yet powerful way to infuse art and culture into our public spaces and inspire guests for the duration of the festival.”

Mr Aytekin said Daniel’s work and choice of film as a medium reflects the true variety of art on offer as part of the 19th Biennale. “That diversity is very much reflected in the great range of smaller satellite sites on offer this year too. We’re hoping that Sofitel’s unconventional hotel art space will complement other smaller, pop up sites listed on the as part of the 19th Biennale, program  to lure art-lovers through our doors once they have checked out larger, traditional major venues like Carriageworks and Cockatoo Island.”

Sofitel Sydney Wentworth is the hotel of choice to accommodate the Biennale’s national and international guests including artists, writers, speakers, curators and journalists. Set in the heart of Sydney’s shopping and business district, the luxury Sofitel is only moments away from the Sydney Opera House, Circular Quay, Art Gallery of New South Wales and beautiful Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney.

Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has created a 19th Biennale ‘So Cultural’ travel package for guests who want to celebrate their artistic side at this year’s event. The package includes an overnight stay at the Sofitel, breakfast for two, a Biennale Guide, two glasses of Yarrabank sparkling wine at Cockatoo Island, and two return ferry tickets from Circular Quay to Cockatoo Island. The package is priced from AU$290 per room per night, and is subject to availability. To make a reservation call the hotel on 02 9228 9188 or email: H3665@sofitel.com

Sofitel has created a ‘You Imagine What You Desire’ inspired cocktail, The Absinthe Minded that will also be available in the hotel’s Soirée Bar for the duration of the hotel’s artist in residence program. The cocktail combines peach liqueur, sparkling wine, orange juice, strawberry puree and its signature spirit, absinthe and is priced at $18 per glass.
