Someone’s Turning 45 This Month!

April 4, 2014 Hotel News No Comments Email Email

Opened in 1969, the Royal on the Park Hotel Brisbane turns 45 this April. Known as the Park Royal Motor Inn, the history and charm of this iconic Brisbane landmark is still retained today.

But with new hotel openings come unique problems. The ‘Royal’ at the time boasted a new bar, restaurant and a large banqueting room but alas, no liquor license! The application was opposed by the Majestic, Criterion and Lennons hotels in the city, causing a delay of its licensing to extend past the date of the Grand Opening. This opening license ‘hiccup’ was temporarily solved until the permanent license was established. The porters and restaurant staff would purchase take away alcohol for guests at nearby pubs and transport it via scooter back to the ‘Royal’. That’s 1969 ingenuity for you!

During the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s the ‘Royal’ was the place to stay for locals, interstate and international guests, which included such names as ACDC, UB40, Kylie Minogue and Tony Bennett. Elton John was known to have made himself so ‘at home’ he was spotted making himself a sandwich in the main catering kitchen.

In 1974 the Brisbane floods had a devastating effect on the hotel, the images of which are now embedded into Brisbane history. With flood waters up to the chins of guests the hotel was unceremoniously evacuated.

In 2000 the hotel had been known as the Parkroyal for almost 32 years and a change was in the air. On the 1st December 2000, the Royal on the Park Hotel was born and a new chapter in its life began. 14 years after, we celebrate a very special Sapphire Birthday.

The Royal on the Park Hotel Brisbane celebrates its 45th Birthday on the 11th April 2014.
