Something You Didn’t Know about Passwords… Check it Out with Mastercard!

Nowadays, when even state secrets are being leaked online, it can leave us questioning the safety of our personal information online. In fact, more than a quarter of Hong Kong consumers are most concerned about online identity theft in relation to data breaches, according to the inaugural Mastercard Safety and Security Index.

While it’s easy to get caught up with the idea of using advanced technologies such as biometrics to enhance online security, it’s even more important to get the basics right. Each of us has on average 10 different accounts, devices and applications on which we have to enter a password at least once a week. Picking a strong password has never been more critical.

Your password is your primary layer of security. But has everyone developed a good habit of picking secure passwords? Another Mastercard study has identified some fun facts about passwords – check it out now!

  • Only 16% of people globally say they never forget passwords, which means that 84% of people have forgotten a password at least once
  • On average, people lose 11 minutes every time they have to reset a forgotten password
  • As a result, more than a third of people have abandoned an online purchase, while six in 10 said that password complications have led to the loss of a time-sensitive transaction, such as the purchase of concert tickets. More than one in two surveyed in Australia and Singapore have been locked out of a website because of troubles with passwords
  • 21% of people use the same password for all their accounts
  • 52% of people rely on birthdays, family names and pet names as passwords
  • The Japanese enter passwords most frequently – 11 times per day compared to the global average of eight times per day
  • More than half of respondents surveyed globally want to see passwords replaced by something more convenient, while enjoying the same level of protection and peace of mind
