Two regional businesses took home the RAA People’s Choice Tourism Award:

• Calypso Star Charters – Experience and/or Service

• BIG4 Renmark Riverfront Holiday Park – Accommodation
BIG4 Renmark Riverfront Holiday Park also received the inaugural Excellence in Accessible Tourism category, recognising a tourism product and/or service that is welcoming for people of all abilities.

In addition, four businesses were inducted into the South Australian Tourism Awards Hall of Fame having won their respective categories for a third consecutive year:

• Aboriginal Cultural Tours SA – Qantas Award for Excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Tourism

• Wrightsair – Major Tour and Transport Operators

• Mulberry Lodge Country Retreat – Hosted Accommodation

• The Playford MGallery by Sofitel – Luxury Accommodation

The awards were announced at a gala dinner on Friday, 9 November at the Adelaide Convention Centre with more than 750 industry representatives in attendance.

Recognised as Tourism’s Night of Nights, the awards celebrated more than 30 category winners who have demonstrated great success and set the benchmarks for best business practice.

Three first-time entrants were crowned best in their categories, with 37 finalists receiving silver or bronze medals, seven of which were first-time entrants. (see full list attached). Peter Cahalan received the Outstanding Contribution by an Individual award. Peter’s contribution to the tourism industry spans five decades, incorporating cultural tourism, heritage tourism, marketing, industry development, destination management and more recently in partnering with tourism stakeholders across the state.

Catherine Hughes was named the South Australian Tourism Student of the Year. Catherine is a student and President of the Tourism and Event Management Club at the University of South Australia.

Ruzbeh Mehta was crowned the South Australian Taxi Driver of the Year – an award which celebrates exceptional customer service and the taxi industry’s significant contribution to South Australia’s tourism industry.

South Australian Tourism Industry Council (SATIC) Chief Executive Officer, Shaun de Bruyn congratulated all winners and medallists from across South Australia.

“Receiving a Tourism Award is fantastic achievement representing the passion, innovation and hard work put forward by our dedicated tourism operators,” said Mr de Bruyn.

“The standards for achieving a Tourism Award are extremely high, making it a highly prestigious accolade which raises brand reputation and consumer awareness amongst an extremely competitive industry.

“As a state we should all be extremely proud of our award winners and congratulate them on their success.”

Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, David Ridgway, said the State Tourism Awards celebrated the enormous passion, endeavour and commitment within the South Australian tourism industry.

“We have so many outstanding operators in South Australia offering incredible experiences that simply cannot be found anywhere else in the country – we look forward to these businesses representing South Australia on the national stage,” said Minister Ridgway.

“Congratulations to each and every winner – you have done South Australia proud.”

Rodney Harrex, Chief Executive of Tourism Awards Principal Partner – South Australian Tourism Commission, said the growing success of the tourism industry was due to the consistent efforts of hard-working operators across the state.

“These passionate operators are driving our $6.7 billion visitor economy and helping attract more visitors to South Australia than ever before,” Mr Harrex said.

This year the South Australian Tourism Awards received 154 nominations. The awards are judged alongside strict rules and criteria, with most winners going on to represent South Australia at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Launceston in 2019.
