Sovereign Hill Sets the Stage For Corroboree

May 30, 2017 Attraction No Comments Email Email

Sovereign Hill and the Wadawurrung community will be staging a unique corroboree this Saturday night, 3rd June, only the second to be held in Ballarat in over 160 years.

Hundreds are expected to gather for the event, where traditional Wadawurrung dance and song will be performed by firelight in this one-night-only performance, led by elder Uncle Bryon Powell.

The corroboree is the flagship event in Sovereign Hill’s second Gnarrwirring Ngitj Festival, which coincides with National Reconciliation Week.

The Festival, held for the first time last year, has been designed to deepen Australians’ understanding of our shared history, and to celebrate Aboriginal stories, traditions and history, as well as the important contribution that Aboriginal People made to the 19th century gold ruches in Victoria.

The corroboree, one of the highlights of the Festival, is a chance for attendees to experience a unique Aboriginal performance, to share culture, and to learn about indigenous history, all against a backdrop of fire and dance.

While corroborees were once a regular occurrence in Ballarat, the corroboree at Sovereign Hill will only be the second held in Ballarat in over 160 years, with last year’s performance being the first.

The ‘Gnarrwirring Ngitj’ (/no,wor-ring nict) Festival, meaning Learning Together in Wadawurrung language, will be held until 3 June 2017,

The Wadawurrung Corroboree is set to be staged on Saturday 3rd June from 5.15pm – 7.00pm.  Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for children, and $20 for concession ticket holders.

The ‘Gnarrwirring Ngitj’’ Festival recently won a prestigious MAGNA Award in the category of Indigenous Projects.  MAGNA is the Museums and Galleries National Awards, and the awards focus on innovation and excellence in exhibition, audience engagement and indigenous projects.
