Spanish Design’s Brightest Star Lends Lustre To First Us Mango Tree As Launch Looms

Winner of the coveted 2013 Architectural Digest España Prize and one of Spain’s most dazzling design talents, Lázaro Rosa-Violán, has been working his magic on the interiors of the first ever Mango Tree restaurant in the US, ahead of its November 26 launch in Washington DC.

unnamed (6)Mango Tree DC at CityCenter, a collaboration between Bangkok-based Mango Tree Worldwide and US celebrity chef and Latin cuisine king Richard Sandoval, takes pride of place in the chic new urban lifestyle oasis that has America’s national capital buzzing.

Mango Tree DC is set to give Washingtonians a taste of contemporary Thai cuisine served with signature Thai warmth and hospitality in a showpiece setting created by a masterful designer at the peak of his powers.

Mr Rosa-Violán said the main challenge in creating Mango Tree DC at CityCenter was to find a concept that reflected what Mango Tree is all about; contemporary Thai cuisine with a twist of European sophistication, warm service and convivial spaces designed for lingering or seguing into other moods and modes once the meal is finished.

“We wanted to create a restaurant that invites and welcome you right from the sidewalk, a restaurant that could have different environments giving the place a special mood either to have a special quiet dinner or enjoy a great cocktail at ground’s floor bar and terrace,” he said. “It’s a series of spaces where guests can spend quality time beyond just dining.”

unnamed (7)Mr Rosa-Violán said some of the design highlights of the project included:

• A new facade with open windows to make the restaurant bright, inviting and cool
• Outside terrace for spring/summer season
• Ground floor’s bar and double height that allows a glimpse of what happens on the top floor
• Second floor main dining with a stunning cocktail bar and show cooking stations

Decorative lighting fixtures were also a key feature, said Mr Rosa-Violán, and a must in terms of drawing attention at night. “You must ensure the restaurant is spectacular even from the outside. All of this creates an atmosphere rich in textures and colors, and consequently a very visually appealing space, but also elegant and sophisticated.”

Mango Tree founder and CEO Pitaya Phanphensophon said he was excited about the impending launch of Mango Tree DC, and congratulated Mr Rosa-Violán and his team for creating something ‘truly special’.

Self-proclaimed ‘urban archaeologist’ and ‘style hunter’, Mr Rosa-Violán created his first restaurant interior on the Balearic island of Ibiza in 1990, and in 2003 he established his firm, Contemporain.

unnamed (8)Observing that very few bars and restaurants were executed with interior design, lighting, ambiance and food working together to make a coherent whole, he decided the interior designer must be an actor, dressing up, changing roles, understanding new identities and integrating them with his own.

Mr Rosa-Violán’s recent triumphs include the feted Praktik Rambla Barcelona hotel in his Catalan hometown, which integrates a functioning bakery into the hotel lobby in a seamless fusion of antique, modern, artisanal and industrial elements.

Mango Tree managing director Trevor MacKenzie said the DC restaurant would take the Mango Tree experience to another level, as each new signature restaurant the group opened tended to do.

“Going out to eat has transcended simply having a meal. People want the full experience – mixology, cooking tips, food photography, great music, and a more social aspect. And that’s what we are all about at Mango Tree … delivering a total lifestyle experience.”
