District Head of the Wakatobi islands in South East Sulawesi, Mr. Hugua, on Friday, 7 August inaugurated the special Pier for Dive Boats that was purposely constructed by Bank Mandiri in cooperation with the British Council of Indonesia.
The Wakatobi National Marine Park dubbed the ultimate Underwater Nirwana, lies in South East Sulawesi and contains some of the most mind-boggling underwater life found on earth. Counting at least 850 coral species, it lies at the heart of the Asia-Pacific Coral Triangle.
Bank Mandiri and the British Council have together embarked on developing a community based eco-tourism area on Mola on Wakatobi comprising a number of villages, where tourist activities will both benefit local communities, while at the same time protect the environment. Wakatobi is already known worldwide as a prime dive site in Indonesia.
To improve access, and facilitiate travel for tourists and divers alike, Garuda already has flights from Jakarta to the Matahora airport on Wangi-wangi island, while the airline has plans to also operate direct flights from Bali soon.
