Selamat Pagi. A very Good Morning ladies and gentlemen, children and beneficiaries of our Embrace programme, Puan Armiesal Asilati binti Ahamad, Senior Medical Social Work Officer and Encik Mohd Izwan bin Abdul Hamid, Medical Social Work Officer from Department of Medical Social Work of Penang Hospital and members of the press.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to this morning’s gathering for the cheque presentation to beneficiaries of this year’s Embrace, Gift of Life and Gift of Limb.

The project under Shangri-La’s Embrace programme is specially for the benefit of poor families with below average income levels regardless of ethnicity and creed, with children in need of corrective surgery so that they have a new a lease of life and also for children who need prosthetics or artificial limbs so that they may go on living normal lives without physical limitations.

As most of you are aware of, the cost of corrective surgeries especially complex heart surgery and also artificial limbs can be a huge strain on finances. This is where Shangri-La’s properties play their role as responsible corporate citizens toward fulfilling the need for life enhancing interventions.

From Golden Sands Resort, we have Embrace ‘Gift of Limb’, a life changing project that benefits underprivileged children in need of artificial limbs. Through this project, children get to live normal lives and are able to go about their daily routines while moving about with greater confidence. For this year, we funded 24 children residing in Kedah and other northern parts of the country. The majority of recipients are with us this morning together with their parents. Throughout last year, we contributed a total of RM121,264 for Embrace Gift of Limb. Overall, we have disbursed a total of RM507,216 since the fund was initiated in 2012.

From Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa, we have Embrace ‘Gift of Life’ that focuses on children suffering from congenital heart disease also known as hole-in-the-heart condition. The ‘Gift of Life’ provides much-needed medical funds so that beneficiaries undergo urgent life-saving operations and postoperative treatments. In total 26 children ranging from new-borns to those up to 3 years of age, have undergone life-saving surgeries. The majority have fully recovered and are living normal lives.

The most recent beneficiary of the ‘Gift of Life’ project is Nurul Adeeva Afsheen binti Iswari, aged 12 months. She was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect at birth and underwent operation on 25 July 2018. She is here among us today with her family. We are personally happy to see beneficiaries coping well and growing normally.

For this year, the ‘Gift of Life’ project had sponsored RM185,373 worth of heart operations cost for 5 young children. For the past 7 years since the Embrace, Shangri-La’s Care for People Project was initiated we have sponsored over RM1 million cash of financial aid and successfully helped 109 children with both heart surgeries and artificial limbs.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Doctors and Nurses from Penang Hospital and Gleneagles Medical Centre for working with us in our Embrace ‘Gift of Life’ and Embrace ‘Gift of Limb’ projects. Your professional expertise has provided immerse joy and a better chance at life for these deserving children.

Thank you and Terima Kasih all for coming today for the cheque presentation ceremony.
