unnamed (30)Australian sporting stars Harry Kewell and Chris Latham have scored a major victory for the Fraser Coast with their tour of the region’s biggest tourism hotspots yesterday to reach a major national, and potential international media audience.

Former Socceroo and one of Australia’s most revered sporting greats, Kewell, teamed up with one of Australia’s most recognised rugby players and passionate Fraser Coast local, Chris Latham, exploring and promoting the Great Sandy Strait and Fraser Island in a forerunner to the soccer star’s upcoming Masterclass clinics at Hervey Bay.

Manager of Tourism and Events for Fraser Coast Opportunities, Tas Webber, said the visit was made possible through the support of local tourism operators including Tasman Venture, Spirit of Hervey Bay, Compass Helicopters, Kingfisher Bay Resort and Enzo’s on the Beach.

“With the weather gods turning on a fantastic day, it was the perfect opportunity to showcase our region to Harry and Chris and a potentially large national and international audience’’ Mr Webber said.

“In a World Cup year for rugby, the timing of this promotion could not be better,’’ he said.

The sports stars’ visit was covered by media including Fox Sports who flew a team with presenter Greg Clark to the region for a feature on their respective careers.

Kewell and Latham enjoyed some of the Fraser Coast’s finest tourism offerings such as cruising and fishing the Great Sandy Strait, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding in Awinya Creek on Western Fraser Island, lunch at Kingfisher Bay Resort, helicopter joy flights and a Fraser Island 4WD adventure to Lake Mackenzie.

Chris Latham said he had a fantastic day.

“We could not have asked for better weather. We got to see the area from all angles – by boat, 4WD and getting in the air for a bird’s eye view by helicopter topped it off perfectly.

“It is great for the region to have national coverage from Fox Sports and they certainly left happy that they had great footage and were impressed with the Fraser Coast,’’ he said.

Harry Kewell was also a big fan of the day.

“Fraser Island yesterday was a fantastic experience. It was great to enjoy the day alongside ex-Wallaby Chris Latham and see all the Island has to offer.

“I would recommend a visit or tour of Fraser Island, a truly incredible part of Australia. Next time, I hope to bring my family,’’ he said.

The hero of two World Cups and former Australian, Liverpool, Leeds United, Galatasaray and Melbourne Heart player will remain in the area until the end of the week as part of the Harry Kewell Academy initiative.

“The Harry Kewell Academy is so excited to return to the Fraser Coast region. The support of the community and excitement of the children attending the clinic made it an easy choice to return in 2015,’’ Kewell said.

Fraser Coast youth aged 8-14 can take part in Masterclass clinics on Thursday and Friday with some tickets still available. The venue is the Hervey Bay Sports Club on Tavistock Street, and coaching starts from 4:00pm. For further information visit
