Spreading the Word without Getting Horse

Cairns Amateurs Carnival’s roving mascots, eight hand painted, fibreglass horses, have made their home in the lobbies of Cairns’ inner-city hotels and Cairns Airport arrivals hall– to form the centre of an exciting ‘spring racing’ display that aims to ‘turn the heads’ of local visitors.

According to Cairns Amateurs CEO, Graham Thornton, this promotional activity is being undertaken in conjunction with Tourism Tropical North Queensland to promote next month’s racing carnival to visitors who along with the local community, contribute significantly to Cairns’ economy.

“Last year’s carnival was responsible for generating $2 million in overnight expenditure, and when taking into account the combined ‘spend’ spanning hotel accommodation, food and beverage, fashion, transport and the actual carnival itself, Cairns Amateurs is a valuable event that boosts the city’s coffers by approximately $13 million each year.  Added to this, Cairns Amateurs plays a key role in directing the spotlight on Cairns at a time when it is looking and acting its best.”

In addition to the roving horses being front and centre for guests arriving at their hotels, Tourism Tropical North Queensland will also work with the Cairns Amateurs team to decorate and install a balloon archway at Cairns Airport’s arrivals hall.  In conjunction with the Cairns Airport ambassador program, the Cairns Amateurs entry statement will provide a warm welcome to visitors while creating awareness of next weekend’s two-day racing event.

Alex de Waal, Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Tropical North Queensland said he is pleased to work with Cairns Amateurs Carnival to shine the spotlight on an event that offers visitors a memorable experience of the destination in full flight during springtime.

“Cairns Amateurs remains one of our most anticipated annual lifestyle events on our growing Cairns events calendar.

“For 58 years locals and visitors from all parts of Australia have converged on Cairns to celebrate and soak up the atmosphere of a country race meeting in a sophisticated and vibrant city.

“One of TTNQ’s key marketing strategies to ensure the success of events is to engage all layers of our community to make sure we make our valued visitors feel like highly appreciated guests.

This promotion does just that by seeking to engage our hotels and their staff to celebrate and promote Amateurs as a much loved local event we want to share with our friends,” he said.

On track and leading the charge in this new tourism based marketing activity is Cairns Amateurs Carnival sponsor, The Pullman Reef Hotel Casino. Interestingly, The Pullman Reef Hotel Casino’s involvement goes far beyond a display in the hotel lobby as a major partner and host of some of Carnival’s key events including naming rights sponsor of the Reef Hotel Casino’s President’s Welcome Cocktail Party, host venue for the Tulloch Club Lunch and longtime sponsor of the Reef Hotel Casino Governor’s Trophy (that has been presented by the Governor of Queensland for the past 56 years).

The Carlton-Mid Cairns Amateurs Carnival is supported by Tourism and Events Queensland and is part of Queensland’s major events campaign,  ‘It’s Live’.
