Stanford and IATA Announce New Executive Program in Aviation Strategy

Stanford University and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) signed an agreement today expanding their partnership to deliver advanced executive education for the aviation industry.

The StanfordIATA Aviation Strategy Program, designed for mid to senior level managers in aviation and related industries is a specialized 10-day program taught by IATA instructors, Stanford faculty and industry experts. The executive program builds on the success of the Stanford–IATA Aviation Management Certificate which has been offered online since 2011 to aviation professionals around the globe.

The Stanford–IATA Aviation Strategy Program will provide valuable training for professionals in an industry expanding from a demand for services. “The need to balance safety, continuous advances in technology and the demands of high volume require highly trained professionals,” says Ismail Albaidhani, IATA’s Head of Global Partnerships and Leading Innovation. “Targeted, specialized training can help expand the pipeline of aviation professionals, increase efficiency and strengthen infrastructure.”

The program is split into two weeklong in-person sessions: the first in Montreal, Canada and the second at Stanford’scampus, providing a unique blend of industry and university teaching. The aviation industry analysis componentstarts in April of 2014 and will be offered by IATA, an international trade body headquartered in Montreal and representing 240 airlines. IATA will provide in-depth coverage of the air transportation system, its function, role and scope. Participants will learn the key facets of the main aviation value chain and business models. Focus will be given to global trends in the airport, airline and civil aviation segments.

The second week-long strategy component of the program, starting on June 16, 2014 at Stanford University will be delivered by Stanford faculty through the Stanford Center for Professional Development (SCPD). The week features courses on strategic analysis and planning, business model innovation, strategic execution and how to manage uncertainty in organizational change. “Participants will acquire the leadership skills and competencies needed to tackle emerging issues in the field,” says Stanford Professor Ray Levitt, Academic Director of the program. “They will be introduced to innovative tools for evaluating, setting, and executing strategy, and emerge with an expert grasp of how to focus an organization to deliver on business priorities.”
