STRUTH! What’s inn a name…
IN his continuing search for the more weird, wacky and wondrous in this world, David Ellis wonders about the naming of this inn on the shores of the man-made Lake of the Ozarks in the USA’s State of Missouri.
Because the Inn’s owners reckon it was simply named after a bloke called Dick who opened it as a bait shop 25 years ago, and because he was a big guy his shop was quickly dubbed Big Dick’s Bait. He added a little grocery corner to supply visiting fishers, then a burger kitchen, and finally a bar selling beer and soft drinks, and had the place officially registered as an inn.
But because it was hard to find on the Lake, Dick would advertise his inn as being half-way between two of the Lake’s three giant dams, and re-named the now-thriving little business Big Dick’s Halfway Inn, which even the local corporate naming authorities saw nothing wrong with.
We’ll take the now-owner’s word for it… after all, Dick was simply looking for something catchy and easy to remember amongst the five-million people who now visit the Lake of the Ozarks every year.
