The Berlin Schönefeld and Tegel Airports have striked a positive balance at the end of the 2019 summer holiday season. The high volume of traffic of the last few weeks has been successfully managed without major interference. In July 2019 alone, 3.3 million passengers were transported, which corresponds to a two percent increase in comparison to the same period last year. For the whole holiday period, 5.03 million passengers are expected – a 2.2 percent increase in comparison with the 2018 holiday period with 4.9 million passengers.

To make the checking-in process run smoothly, a total of 35 self-service kiosks and 17 self-service bag drops available to easyJet customers have contributed. (TXL: 17 self-service kiosks, 9 self-service bag drops / SXF: 18 self-service kiosks, 8 self-service bag drops)

Prof. Dr.-Ing Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “Thanks to the good teamwork of all of our involved partners, we were able to take all of our passengers from Schönefeld and Tegel on holiday despite the renewed growth. On peak days, we dealt with more than 130,000 passengers in both airports. My special thanks goes to the employees of the airport company as well as the various partners at the check-in desks, in the terminals and gates, at security and passport controls, on the runways, in the control centres as well as the in baggage handling. They also did a very good job on the many hot days and with the consistently high passenger numbers”.

During the holiday period, an average of 74,300 passengers used Tegel Airport daily, while Schönefeld Airport handled around 35,400 passengers on average every day. For Berlin, this adds up to a consistently high passenger volume of 110,000 passengers per day, on average.

In the first half of the year, 75% of flights from Tegel and 76% of flights from Schönefeld were on time, which puts Schönefeld and Tegel in the mid-range in national comparison with other comparable German airports. In June, in which there was no significant holiday traffic at all at other large airports yet, Tegel ranked (66%) worse than in the first half of the year, but still ahead of other large airports. Schönefeld was at 70% in June, which was the second most punctual airport of all comparable airports.

Air traffic delays can arise in various processes and due to different actors working together in the airport. In Berlin, under 5 percent of delays are attributed to the airport infrastructure. The main causes are in the areas of the airlines and airspace capacity.
