Australia’s leading Mediterranean travel experts, Sun Island Tours, has advised that none of their tours operate in the vicinity of the devastating fires that are currently ongoing in Greece.
The areas affected include Mati, Neos Voutsas, Rafina, which are about 30km North East of Athens city centre and approximately 15km from the International Airport. Sadly 77 people have died and 187 people injured with many still missing.
Owner of Sun Island Tours, John Polyviou, has reminded agents that while there are two main ports in Athens – Rafina Port and Piraeus Port, all of SIT’s cruise vessels to the Cycladic islands operate out of Piraeus Port, which is far from the affected region.
He adds that Rafina port, while also a popular departure point for ferries to the Cycladic islands, it is not affected by the fires, but very likely closed due to its close proximity to the affected area.
“We are keeping a very close eye on the ongoing developments there in Greece,” says John, “Our ground operators are also ensuring that all of our clients and ferry passengers are kept well away from the affected areas and fully informed of the situation.”
While there has also been an outbreak in Kineta, an area 50km west of Athens, the situation is under control and no deaths recorded; and Sun Island Tours will reroute any tours heading to Corinth via alternative roads.
Based on DFAT’s report, no Australians have been reported injured or missing and currently, Cyprus and Spain have sent facilities to assist with the fires.
