On the shores of Italy’s Lake Como sits the magnificent Grand Hotel Tremezzo. At 105 years old, the hotel – an authentic Art Nouveau palace – has a glorious history of luxury, opulence and grandeur. The most romantic terrace on all of Lake Como is the one at the hotel’s La Terrazza Restaurant, one of film star Greta Garbo’s favourite spots for dinner, overlooking the magical waters of the lake.
The menu, by star Italian chef ‘Maestro’ Gualtiero Marchesi together with the hotel’s Executive Chef Osvaldo Presazzi, changes with the seasons to take advantage of local produce and fresh water fish, serving traditional dishes enlivened with a touch of creativity. Dishes include tantalising plates such as Wild Sea Bass with a tomato, green olive, caper and celery sauce, and Fillet of Veal with foie gras and black truffle, Gualtiero Marchesi-style with spinach, pine nuts and raisins. Every morning, breakfast is served at La Terrazza as the sun rises over the town of Bellagio across the lake.
With the pleasure of being the first and only fondue restaurant on Lake Como, L’Escale Fondues & Wine Bar at Grand Hotel Tremezzo is a more relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy local flavours, accompanied by Italian regional wines from the hotel’s expansive cellar. The cooking takes place in the centre of the table. Delicious sauces and coloured sea salts accompany to create new and different flavours while guests share plates in a convivial setting. In summer, supper is served on the lakeside terrace, while in the cooler autumn evenings dinner is moved indoors to the cantina, carved into the rock with bare brick walls and wine casks for tables. Choose from fish, cheese, Bourguignonne or Chinoise Fondues, or perhaps a classic Raclette Fondue with potatoes, gherkins, onions and vegetable mostarda.
On Mondays, the hotel’s T Pizza restaurant opens on summer evenings, serving a selection of gourmet pizzas from the wood-fire oven by the Piscina dei Fiori pool in the gardens. T Pizza is also open during the day from May to September for a range of delicious grills and pizzas, such as the Valtellina with porcini mushrooms, air-dried salted beef, mozzarella and tomato, or the classic Quattro Formaggi traditional four-cheeses pizza with gorgonzola, taleggio, parmesan and mozzarella.
Located down by the hotel’s unique private beach and gorgeous floating swimming pool, T Beach is the centre of new cuisine at Grand Hotel Tremezzo. At the new circular platform, guests can enjoy exquisite fish, meat, vegetable and cheese grills (not to mention desserts) that chefs prepare on the spot in front of diners – offering a cooking lesson in the finest cuisine in front of a simply stunning backdrop. With a Champagne bar by Pommery, T Beach is a must for guests at Grand Hotel Tremezzo. T Beach is also the place for festive parties on Saturday evenings during the summer season.
For guests passionate about Italian cuisine, Grand Hotel Tremezzo also offers exclusive cooking classes. The hotel chef will walk couples and small groups through a selection of classic Italian dishes, including Bruschette, a light Tagliatelle with fresh cherry tomatoes, a Milanese-style veal escalope, and concluding with a delicate Zabaione.
Lovers of fine wine are also catered for, with an early evening Wine Tasting paired with carefully curated dishes. The flight of wines runs from a light Prosecco through to a deep Tuscan red as the courses are unveiled. Guests are invited to join at just €45 per person.
