Sweden’s representative Sofia Jannok has landed in Seychelles for this weekend’s carnival in Seychelles. The 2016 edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria in the Seychelles will this year welcome some 23 international delegations including Sofia Jannok, the twice-Grammy-nominated Sámi artist, singer, songwriter and agitator for indigenous rights and environmental justice.

Sofia Jannok was on Monday morning greeted at Seychelles International Airport by Sherin Naiken, the CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board. At the recent COP21 climate conference in Paris, Jannok gathered at an indigenous pavilion with others from around the world to call attention to the impact of climate change on indigenous communities. She has also taken a strong stance in social and news media against the mining of Sámi lands. Her recent singles “We Are Still Here” and “This Is My Land” adopt a mantra common to indigenous peoples around the world. Jannok’s music is inspired by diverse musical influences, mainly by pop and Sámi yoik. She sings and writes songs in Sámi, Swedish and English.

The Carnaval International de Victoria in the Seychelles also rallies a large contingent of International Press all eager to discover the diversity of culture that will be on display at the carnival parade of Saturday the 23rd April in Victoria, the capital of the Seychelles.
