Set to welcome a record 150,000 visitors, one of Switzerland’s longest standing traditional cultural festivals, the highly anticipated Unspunnen Festival <> , will take place from 26 August – 3
September 2017 in Interlaken.

A festival that will see locals come together in traditional costumes to play and compete in all sorts of games and activities including folk dancing, wrestling and alphorn blowing, one of the highlights is the participation of burly male wrestlers throwing the 76kg Unspunnen stone to break distance records.

Director of Switzerland Tourism Mark Wettstein says the Festival is one of the the most exciting celebrations of Swiss folklore in the country involving many traditional elements and activities.

“The endless folk music, dancing, parades, games and activities will no doubt transport visitors back in time to get a taste of the country’s impressive history, culture and wealth of traditions that have been so well preserved by the different Swiss cantons,” says Mark.

The origin of the Unspunnen Festival dates back to the 13th century with the key purpose of defusing tension and conflict between the city and the provinces, and the government and its people. The Festival revived in 1805
when the people of the Bernese Oberland were in constant rebellion against the supremacy of the City of Bern. While not a regular occurence, the festival has taken place 14 times since then, with the last one in 2006.

Ideally located at the foothills of the imposing Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau summits; and between the glistening lakes of Thun and Brienz, visitors usually incorporate the festival into their wider Swiss itinerary to enjoy the sprawling playground that has given Interlaken and the Jungfrau Region their reputation as the country’s adventure capital. From soft walks, endless mountain railways and cableway rides and hikes to extreme dare-devil water and air-borne activities, adrenaline and all things outdoorsy are major themes for visitors to this part of the country.

Switzerland Tourism advises agents with clients interested in attending the 2017 Unspunnen Festival to purchase their event tickets, Swiss Travel Passes and make accommodation bookings in advance to avoid disappointment.
