The Sydney Film Festival has launched celebrating its 60th anniversary and boasting more films than ever, with 55 nations represented.

Running from June 6 to June 15 the festival will show 192 titles from directors across the globe.

It should also be easier to see films than before as there are additional screenings at the State Theatre and Event Cinemas, as well as a new program at the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace in Cremorne.

Minister for Tourism, Major Events and the Arts, George Souris, said, “The NSW Government is a proud supporter of the Sydney Film Festival as one of the State’s major cultural events. NSW film talent is also being represented at the Festival with the world premiere of Mystery Road on the opening night. Both are demonstrating the strength of the State’s screen sector and our creative industries.”

Films to watch out for include: Only God Forgives – a tough Thai-set thriller featuring Ryan Gosling; Stories we Tell – a tale of family mysteries; and Behind the Candelabra – featuring Michael Douglas as Liberace.

Red carpet guests on the Australian premiere of Stoker on Friday 7 June at the State Theatre include South Korean Director Park Chan-wook (Joint Security Area, Thirst, the Vengeance trilogy) and Australian actress Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland, The Kids Are All Right, Jane Eyre).

The film festival first started in 1954, was locally inspired, ran for 4 days and was a sell-out success.

The backpackers Sydney attracts in June have a range of cultural options on offer, including a comedy about Frida Kahlo, a pop-up wearable technology exhibition, and a celebration of Indian culture.
