One Sunday morning each month, under the banner Singing at the House, the Opera House and artistic partner the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs will invite people of all ages and abilities to come together to join in the joy of choral singing. Participants will learn and sing a wide variety of songs in the public spaces, foyers and venues of Australia’s most famous building.

All music will be taught on the day, with each of the free 90-minute sessions ending in a short performance. No preparation is necessary – just a passion for singing with others.

The inaugural Singing at the House session will be held in Bennelong Restaurant on Sunday, 2 November, 2014, and will celebrate musical theatre with songs from well-known shows. The second event, on 7 December, will focus on Christmas carols and other seasonal songs. More events and themes will be announced in 2015.

Sydney Philharmonia Choirs General Manager David Francis said: “At Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, we believe in the joy of choral singing and in sharing this with as many people as possible. Singing at the House is an exciting new initiative which provides a wonderful opportunity for people from all parts of Sydney’s community regardless of age or ability to regularly come together to sing, to explore their voice and fuel their passion for singing.”

Each session will be led by internationally acclaimed conductor and Sydney Philharmonia Music Director Brett Weymark, who said: “Australia is a country built on song and the importance of singing has always been part of Australian culture. Our aim for Singing at the House is simple – we want people to come together to enjoy singing with one another. Each month will be different and we aim to cover everything from musicals to carols, from gospel to classical. I am excited to be part of Singing at the House, which will without doubt become part of the voice of Sydney.”
Sydney Opera House CEO Louise Herron AM said: “We hope people  will come and sing their hearts out at the Opera House at the Sunday morning Singing at the House events. Singing in a choir is a wonderful experience and there could hardly be a better place to do it than at the Opera House. This initiative is the perfect way to take our artistic partnership with the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs to the next level and to realise our ambitions of creating accessible performing arts experiences and making more and better use of the building’s public spaces.”
