The Sydney Opera House today announced that the creator of social media phenomenon Humans of New YorkBrandon Stanton, will appear in Australia for the first time on Saturday 10 February for a one-off Sydney exclusive.

After losing his job as a bond trader in Chicago in 2010, Stanton moved to New York with no friends, no money and no training in photography or journalism. As a hobby, he started to walk the streets of New York taking photos of strangers, and from the endlessly fascinating stream of faces and stories he captured, Humans of New York was born. Since then, his intimate and compelling series of portraiture and stories has become an online phenomenon, amassing more than 20 million social media followers and spawning countless imitators around the world.

Edwina Throsby, Head of Talks and Ideas at the Sydney Opera House, says: “Brandon Stanton has individually spearheaded an international internet phenomenon. We are so pleased to be providing Sydneysiders with this unique opportunity to hear the stories behind the stories direct from the source. It promises to be an unmissable and illuminating event for everyone who’s interested in storytelling.”

Brandon will mark his first ever trip to Australia with an afternoon at the Sydney Opera House, taking audiences behind the scenes of his work. Elaborating on some of his best and worst moments, Stanton will delve into how Humans of New York really started, whether the myth matches the reality, and the possibilities for building a wildly-successful international career with just a camera and internet connection.
