Tourism Ireland in collaboration with the Sydney St Patrick’s Day Organisation is turning the Sydney Opera House green for St Patrick’s Day!

300+ stadiums, statues, museums and towers are set to go green globally to celebrate our national day.

The annual ‘Global Greening’ initiative, now in its ninth year, has grown from strength to strength, with lots of new landmarks signing up to take part this year.

And, making a welcome return this year, for the first time since 2014, the Sydney St Patrick’s Day Organisation in partnership with Tourism Ireland is turning the Sydney Opera House green.

Among this year’s iconic global landmarks, there are a host of Australian sites getting in on the action, including the Big Kangaroo Border Village, Hyde Park Barracks, State Library of New South Wales, Sydney Town Hall, The Bell Tower, Council House and Elizabeth Quay in Perth; and QPAC in Brisbane to name a few.

Other new sites and buildings for 2018 include: the Wawa Goose monument in Ontario and the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat (also in Ontario), the National Football Museum in Manchester, the Palais de l’Europe (the seat of the Council of Europe) in Strasbourg, the beautiful Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Königsbau building in Stuttgart, Uilenburgersjoel Amsterdam, the Yokohama Marine Tower in Japan, Pen Monument in Hanoi, the Sammy Ofer Stadium in Haifa, as well as Vabaduse Väljak (Freedom Square) in Tallinn.

These new sites will join some ‘old favourites’ which have gone green in previous years – including the Colosseum in Rome, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Sacré-Cœur Basilica and the Sleeping Beauty castle at Disneyland® in Paris, the Sky Tower in Auckland, Niagara Falls and the London Eye.

Tourism Ireland’s unique global campaign – now in its ninth year – is continuing to build on the success of 2017 and grow overseas tourism to the island of Ireland again in 2018

President of the Sydney St Patrick’s Day Committee Robert Kineavy said, “As the national holiday that is celebrated in more countries around the world than any other, St Patrick’s Day is the day when everyone wants to be Irish. Renowned as a day that fills our hearts and minds with Irish    pride and the streets with all things green, 2018 is shaping up to be another big year for Sydney.”

Sofia Hansson, Manager Tourism Ireland, Australia and New Zealand said, “This is the ninth year of Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening initiative and each year I am delighted to see even more well-known attractions and landmark sites wishing to get involved and join our St Patrick’s celebrations. More than 70 million people around the world claim links to the island of Ireland and St Patrick’s Day is a truly unique opportunity to reconnect them with their heritage.”

The Sydney St Patrick’s celebration traditionally takes place on a Sunday and this year will be no different with the festivities taking place in the Entertainment Quarter, Moore Park, on Sunday 18th March. There will be a variety of music on the big stage from12pm, a children’s parade and play area with bouncing castles and face painting galore, Irish dancers and marching bands displaying the very best in local talent, and lots of food and drink stalls to keep attendees refreshed during the day. Make plans to get there early, grab a great vantage point and enjoy one of the best celebrations in the country.
