Sydney Summer Season 2018 Major international stars, quirky premieres and iconic opera roles

THE MERRY WIDOW (Lehár) Danielle de Niese – Aussie soprano superstar arrives in Sydney Opera Australia has lured Australia’s own Danielle de Niese from glorious Glyndebourne in the UK to make her opera debut in her home country in this beautiful production, lavishly designed with lashings of satin and with Graeme Murphy’s signature spirited choreography.

She’s the perfect star to bring Lehár’s charming operetta to life amongst Michael Scott-Mitchell’s opulent art deco sets and Jennifer Irwin’s flowing 1920s costumes. Joining Danielle de Niese will be renowned Australian tenor Alexander Lewis, musical theatre regular David Whitney and Opera Australia’s stunning Stacey Alleaume. Vanessa Scammell will conduct the Opera Australia Chorus and Orchestra. Joan Sutherland Theatre, Sydney Opera House 31 December – 3 February 2018

CARMEN (Bizet) John Bell’s acclaimed production brings opera’s iconic femme fatale back to Sydney After her highly acclaimed performances as Carmen in Handa Opera Sydney Harbour, Israeli soprano Rinat Shaham returns to the role that she has made her own. John Bell’s vibrant production of Bizet’s opera will also feature exciting young Argentine tenor Marcelo Puente, who will be making his OA debut in the role of Don José, a role he recently played in North America and Japan to wide acclaim. THE NOSE (Shostakovich) Barrie Kosky’s quirky imagining of a rogue nose on the run “Terrifically realised, brilliantly inventive and highly entertaining” – The Spectator This highly anticipated production of the rarely performed Shostakovich masterpiece is guaranteed to be summer’s quirky hit. Directed by Australian director Barrie Kosky and coproduced with The Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, this will be the first time The Nose has been performed in Australia. Conducted by Andrea Molino, The Nose will feature a huge cast of both international and local performers. Joan Sutherland Theatre, Sydney Opera House 21 February – 3 March 2018

LA TRAVIATA (Verdi) Only in Sydney – World-wide role debut by Australian sweetheart Nicole Car The smash hit of last year’s summer season, La Traviata makes a triumphant return to the Joan Sutherland Theatre, this time with Australia’s own superstar soprano Nicole Car making her world-wide role debut as Violetta, a role Lyndon Terracini believes she was born to play. Nicole will be joined by great Russian tenor Vitaliy Bilyy and the fabulous Ji Min Park who has become a huge favourite with Australian audiences. DON QUICHOTTE (Massenet) The world’s best bass brings his signature role to Sydney Never having presented this opera before, this full staging of Massenet’s Don Quichotte will be keenly anticipated by lovers of such glorious music. OA has gathered a stellar cast from around the world including arguably the world’s best bass Ferruccio Furlanetto whose turn in the title role has become his signature piece. He’ll be joined by exciting young Russian mezzo-soprano Elena Maximova and Guillaume Tourniaire will return to Australia to conduct this much loved work. GREAT OPERA HITS Opera’s greatest arias sung by Opera Australia’s greatest artists
Presented by host and pianist Guy Noble, Opera Australia’s stars will perform the world’s most famous arias from Bizet, Puccini, Rossini and Verdi. Great Opera Hits concerts are the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon. Lasting around 90 minutes with a short interval, they are the ideal introduction to opera or simply a fantastic way to experience the Opera House in all of its glory.
