The implementation of the Bureau of Foreign Trade, MOEA’s “Meet Taiwan – Convention Industry Overall Plan” has been commissioned to the TAITRA, who assisted Kaohsiung in bidding for the right to host the ICCA 2020 Congress. The 2017 ICCA Congress was held from November 12 – 15 in Prague, where the congress chairperson, Nina Freysen-Pretorius, officially announced that Kaohsiung, Taiwan will be hosting the 2020 ICCA Congress.

The ICCA is the world’s largest and the most authoritative international convention organizations. ICCA has over 1,000 members in 98 countries. Each year, about 1,000 international convention professionals will meet for the annual ICCA congress. In 1992, the ICCA held its annual congress in Taipei, Taiwan. The 2020 congress will be the first ICCA congress held in Taiwan in 28 years.

To help Kaohsiung City Government bid for the ICCA 2020 Congress, TAITRA actively provided various resources and assistance through Meet Taiwan during the three year bidding preparation period. These include helping Kaohsiung compete for the right to host the 2014 ICCA-Taiwan MICE Bid Workshop, improving the local government’s ability to bid for international conventions, and improving the bidding success rate. In addition, TAITRA helped Kaohsiung obtain the right to host the 2015 ICCA Management & Finance Committee, and successfully helped established contact between the convention industry in Kaohsiung and ICCA.

Furthermore, TAITRA actively assisted Kaohsiung City with international promotions, and invited well-known overseas convention media to come and conduct special reports and interviews. In international exhibitions for incentive travel and meetings, Kaohsiung was used as the promotional theme to promote its international image. In the past two years, TAITRA has continuously sponsored ICCA congress ID badges, and actively exposed Kaohsiung’s image (Kaohsiung’s soft and hardware capabilities) when it hosted the Next Generation Lunch at the 2016 Congress. When Kaohsiung entered the first round of selection, TAITRA assisted Martin Sirk, CEO of ICCA, in his trip to Taiwan for site survey in June of this year. TAITRA Chairman James Huang accompanied Mr. Sirk to visit Lin Chuan, the former President of the Executive Yuan, so as to demonstrate our central government’s strong support for Kaohsiung City’s bid.

In the past, cities that participated in bidding for the ICCA congress rarely succeeded during their first try. For example, Kuching, Malaysia bid three times before it succeeded in obtaining the 2016 hosting right. Huston, Texas, United States bid four times before it obtained the right to host the 2019 congress. For its first bid, Kaohsiung stood out among eight convention cities in the initial selection stage, and entered into the final round with Yokohama and Cartagena. With cooperation between the central and local government, Kaohsiung was the final winner.

Meet Taiwan successfully assisted in bidding for many international conventions to be held in Taiwan. Kaohsiung’s success in bidding for the ICCA 2020 Congress showed that Taiwan is once again recognized on the international convention stage. This effectively increases Taiwan convention industry’s visibility internationally and improves its international competitiveness.
