Taiwan Forges Ahead with Promotion of Green MICE in 2017

April 4, 2017 MICE No Comments Email Email

Taiwan’s efforts in promoting green MICE are highly recognized. In fact, Taiwan was awarded the UFI Sustainable Development Award by the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) in 2016. Green MICE is also an important component of the Taiwan’s MICE Industry Promotion Program that began in 2017; green MICE guidelines will be implemented, green MICE events and meetings will be planned, green booth competitions will be held, and events/venues will receive assistance with acquiring Carbon Footprint Verification: PAS 2050:2011, Carbon Neutrality: PAS 2060, and ISO 20121 Event Sustainability Management System.

Green MICE guidelines are announced based on international standards and current conditions of the MICE industry in Taiwan, suggesting how green procedures should be carried out in terms of transportation, food, lodging, booth decoration materials, and promotional materials. There are also rewards for those who show great progress. The guidelines, updated every year, are aimed at promoting energy saving/carbon reduction methods and sustainability. To date, 20 conferences and exhibitions have already implemented the guidelines. This year, a database that provides information about Green MICE companies and eco-friendly materials will be established.

To reward organizers of events that implement the guidelines, six winners will be selected for a cash prize of up to NT$100,000 for both the exhibition category and the conference category. Green booth competitions will help event organizers, exhibitors, and design companies seek greener alternatives. Criteria can include energy savings, carbon reducing decorations, green PR, environmental sustainability, and green innovative designs.

The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), responsible for implementing the program, sent representatives to the UFI Education Forum and the UFI Open Seminar in Asia 2017, both held in Singapore this February, to share and discuss how Taiwan promotes green MICE and urged further cooperation with other Asian countries to make sustainable green MICE events possible.
