The popular Big Bottle Wine festival, now in its fourth successful year, will take place at Taj Cape Town from the 29 – 31 August 2014 for the first time this year.

A cast of South Africa’s top winemakers and chef’s assemble for this three day event, where guests have the rare opportunity to speak with the wine producer while sampling delectable canapés which have been created to accompany each specific wine. “This unique event always turns out to be lots of fun. A big bottle such as the Nebuchadnezzar holds the equivalent of 20 regular bottles. These special bottles are normally only produced to commemorate a special release or exceptional vintage, and always makes an impressive statement for any celebration,” comments Marcetteau.

Taj Cape Town, is a leisurely one minute stroll from the doorstep of one of the City’s finest luxury hotels will take you past the Houses of Parliament and the National Library to the heart of the Company Gardens; the historical site where South Africa’s first wine was produced by Jan van Riebeeck over 350 years ago.

“Wine is so closely interwoven with the history of Cape Town that it has become an intrinsic part of this beautiful City’s culture,” comments Michael Pownall, General Manager of Taj Cape Town. “Our Hotel is synonymous with life’s luxuries, and we have introduced a number of initiatives to entrench our position as the preeminent destination for anyone partial to the pleasures of wine.”

“Only a handful of the top establishments worldwide can offer the likes of a 1947 Château Pétrus, a 1986 Château Haut Brion, or a 1991 Heitz Marta’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon,” comments Taj Cape Town’s Head Sommelier, Tatiana Marcetteau, who is proud of the hotel’s exclusive South African collaboration with the World of First Growths Wine List. “At a cost of R128 000, the 1947 Petrus is probably a once in a lifetime wine for most. But ultimately this alliance has unlocked access to 36 of the world’s most coveted wines from the best vintages, allowing the opportunity to compare the best South African wines with the top iconic wines from around the world,” adds Marcetteau.

The Taj Classic Wine Trophy Awards has been one of the highlights on the wine calendar for the past 16 years. A prestigious panel of French wine experts gather every March to taste the best wines that South Africa has to offer.  Conducted via a blind tasting, the judges seek to reward any South African wines that would rightfully earn its place in the top cellars or wine lists around the world due to its elegance, balance and finesse.

The Pendock Wine Gallery is another of Taj Cape Town’s innovative ideas to showcase the culture and craft of the local wine industry. “Every winemaker is an artist in their own right, however even the luckiest winemaker is limited to a maximum of 50 or so vintages in their lifetime with which to create their personal masterpiece,” comments Marcetteau.  The Gallery is curated by renowned wine scribe, Neil Pendock, and comprises six installations throughout the year that each highlight a particular style of wine, a wine region, or wines from a specific winemaker.

“With vineyards set among breath-taking scenery offering the promise of fine wine and good food, it is no surprise that a visit to the winelands is a top attraction for both tourists and locals,” remarks Pownall. “There are over 600 wineries within an hour’s drive of the City, and many of the historic Wine Estates date back to over 300 years.  One of the more popular services which our team offers is suggesting their favourite wineries and hidden gems to our guests who are looking for something specific or off the beaten track.”
