The Silk Routes of western China and Central Asia take you on a journey never to be forgotten. For 2,000 years the ancient roads connected China with the Mediterranean via a network of overland routes, passing flourishing oasis cities, dramatic scenery and lands conquered by the legendary Tamerlane.

This year Abercrombie & Kent is offering two hosted journeys into this extraordinary region, both of which offer travellers an unparalleled opportunity to connect with its people and experience a culture, warm and welcoming, while discovering a part of the world seen by few.

The Ancient Silk Road with Sujata Raman

Starting in Beijing this adventure starts in earnest in Dunhuang, the last stop for caravans to rest and replenish before facing the desert beyond. Follow in the footsteps of merchants who, for over a thousand years, made this journey with caravans of camels loaded with rubies, jade, metals, amber, musk and of course silk. Traverse the vast hinterland of Asia, the rugged and desolate landscapes and once-flourishing oasis cities and trading outposts. Along the way, visit sites important to both Buddhist and Uighur culture and explore the ancient cities of Urumqi, Turfan and Kashga accompanied by A&K’s Australian Managing Director, Sujata Raman.

A&K’s 10-day The Ancient Silk Road with Sujata Raman Hosted Group Journey is priced from $10,995 per person.

Maximum of 18 guests

Dates: 3 – 12 September 2017

Ancient Trade Routes of Central Asia

Hosted by renowned Uzbekistani guide, Victoriya Yalanskaya, the mountains and deserts of Central Asia are the backdrop for this extraordinary adventure to the heart of the ancient Silk Road. This is one of the world’s most remote and untouched areas and during the Middle Ages was the epicentre of a powerful empire. Explore Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, two countries steeped in antiquity with a lasting legacy from the warriors and emperors who made their mark, and visit some of the oldest cities in the world such as the legendary Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva.

A&K’s 15-day The Ancient Trade Routes of Central Asia Hosted Group Journey is priced from $11,995 per person.
