Tell us your Twitter and Facebook secrets or stay out!

The first confirmation and image of an intrusive new questionnaire to be distributed to arriving travellers at US airports has been provided online. Just imagine trying to fill out the form at the airport after a 14-hour flight to Los Angeles!

The form is a supplemental one, so most travellers won’t receive it. But if US immigration authorities suspect the motives of you or your clients in trying to enter the US, they may hand them this form, which demands disclosure of biographical information going back 15 years and social media handles going back five years.

Here are some questions from the form:

  • Have you even travelled to any country (other than your country of residence) in the last 15 years? If yes, provide details of each trip, including locations visited, date visited, source of funds and length of stay.
  • Provide all addresses where you have lived during the last 15 years…
  • Please provide your unique user name for any websites or applications you have used to create or share content (photos, videos, status updates, etc.) as part of a public profile within the last five years.

The form then states: I understand that any wilfully false or misleading statement or wilful concealment of a material fact made by me herein may subject me to permanent exclusion from the United States, and if I am admitted to the United States, may subject me to criminal prosecution and/or removal.

The form can be inspected here, in a view provided on Twitter by Yeganah Torbati, who writes on US State Department and sanctions for Reuters.

US President Donald Trump’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) approved the new supplemental questionnaire on 23 May 2017, Reuters states. The new form, designated DS-5535, appears to be a temporary measure as the forms carry the expiration date of 30 November 2017.
