Ten years and 1,200 wells: AKP’s Clean Water for Cambodia

Since 2008, A&K Philanthropy (AKP) has been building wells for families in Siem Reap, Cambodia. To date more than 1,200 wells have been installed, bringing fresh, bacteria-free water to more than 20,000 people. Not only does the clean water improve sanitation and health, it is also used to irrigate farm plots and water domestic livestock, helping to improve livelihoods as well.

On a recent visit to Preak Ko Tmey village, subsistence farmer Pouk happily announced to the AKP team that she had three healthy pregnant pigs thanks to the local well. In the past, it was a struggle to care for more than one pig at a time with high temperatures and little means of keeping livestock cool. Now, with easy access to water from the AKP clean water well and filter set she can raise many more pigs. The resulting income funds her daughters’ education. She has earned enough to move them from the local high school to a school in Siem Reap, where standards are much higher and educational opportunities greater.

Abercrombie & Kent makes a donation to AKP on behalf of every guest travelling in support of such grassroots efforts and guests travelling to Siem Reap and the Angkor temples have the opportunity to meet a family who has benefited from the installation of a well and witness first-hand the impact that clean water has on their lives.
