The beautiful main theme lantern of this year’s event, created in the shape of a bluefin tuna, is accompanied by an impressive light and fireworks show. A first at this festival is the ingenious use of light-carrying drones flying in formation to create amazing imagery in the night sky above the main theme lantern. The outstanding colorful lantern creations in the various lantern areas of the festival have received widespread praise from the visiting crowds as well.

Starting with the test phase that began on February 15 up to February 20 more than 2 million people visited the festival. Because of the record-breaking influx of visitors to Pingtung, hotels and guesthouses in Donggang town and also in neighboring Pingtung City and on Little Liuqiu Island have been fully booked, a great boost for the local economy.

This year’s festival has three main lantern areas, one at Dapeng Bay, one in Donggang town, and one in Pingtung City, collectively covering a land area of 38 hectares and a seawater area of 200 hectares. For the first time in 30 years of staging the Taiwan Lantern Festival, the largest lagoon in Taiwan has been used to create a magnificent sea bay lantern area.

The Taiwan Lantern Festival will last until March 3 and the Taiwan Tourism Bureau expects overall visitor numbers to reach between 8 and 10 million people. If you haven’t been to the festival yet, make sure to come to this grand event!
