The 3rd ACMECS Tourism Ministerial Conference successfully held during ITE HCMC

The 3rd Meeting of  Tourism Ministers of the 5 countries under the ambitious Ayeyarwady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Co-operation Strategy (ACMECS), namely Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam (CLMV), was successfully held during the annual ITE HCMC at the Crystal Palace on September 7, 2017, and the following shortened joint statement was given:.

  1. The meeting was chaired by H.E. Nguyen Ngoc Thien, Minister for Culture,Sports& Tourism, Viet Nam.
  1. The meeting was convened to discuss the implementation of projects and the “Plan of Action” on ACMECS Tourism Co-operation, which emphasizes promoting joint tourism marketing activities, tourism products and responsible tourism.
  1. It was noted that in 2016 the number of international tourist arrivals in the 5 ACMECS countries has increased to 54.75 million, an increase of 5.29% compared to that of 2015.
  1. Joint tourism promotion and marketing activities were the participation in international tourism events such as Vietnam International Travel Mart (VITM), Thailand Travel Mart Plus (TTM+), International Travel Expo Ho Chi Minh City (ITE HCMC) and the support given to Cambodia Travel Mart (CTM) to be held for the first time in Siem Reap, Cambodia, fromNovember 17-19, 2017.
  1. Tourism product linkages being promoted by ACMECS countries were thematic multi-country tour programs such as the Southern Coastal Corridor, Northern Heritage Trail, Mekong Discovery Trail, Cruising the Mekong Delta andGoldenTriangle Mekong River, and the most important East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC).
  1. ACMECS tourism co-operation should be more action orientated and support given for the Visit Laos Year 2018, ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF)Chiang Mai,Thailand, in January 2018, and ATF Viet Nam 2019.
  1. ACMECS should support and promote the “Five Countries – One Destination” Campaign. Besides, the synergy between ACMECS, CLMV (includingThailand) and Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) mechanism should be strengthened.
  1. The Kingdom ofThailandwill be the host of the 4th Meeting of ACMECS Tourism Ministers in 2019.

Actually, there was the 4th Meeting of CLMV Tourism Ministers at the same time at the same place. It was stated that intra-regional travel as well as travel from third markets will be marketed and promoted accordingly.

The Heads of Delegations were the following:

  1. H.E. So Mara, Secretary of State, Ministry of Tourism, Kingdom of Cambodia,
  2. H.E. Prof. Dr. Bosengkham Vongdara, Tourism Minister of LAO PDR,
  3. H.E. Tint Thwin, Director General, Ministry of Hotels & Tourism, Myanmar,
  4. H.E. Prof. Dr. Chavanee Thongroj, Vice Minister, Ministry of Tourism & Sports, Kingdom of Thailand,
  5. H.E. Nguyen Ngoc Thien, Tourism Minister of Viet Nam.
