The Best of Belgian Design Comes to Hong Kong Partner Country of Business of Design Week 2013 Announces Royal Visit, Ministerial Delegation, Inspirational Speakers and Event Line-Up

Belgian Spirit today announced a month-long extravaganza featuring the very best of Belgian architecture, design and fashion in Hong Kong.  The organization represents Belgium, who is this year’s Business of Design Week (BoDW) country partner.

In addition to an eagerly anticipated royal visit to Hong Kong by Queen Mathilde, a ministerial delegation and a selection of inspirational speakers, the crew of Belgian Spirit will also organize an array of exclusive must-see events in December 2013. These will:

Candi Beach CottagesT  BRING the country’s creativity, design and innovation closer to World audiences.

T  PROVIDE a platform for its business delegation to network, exchange views and explore business opportunities with Asian counterparts

T  SHOWCASE Belgium’s leading designers and brands to the Hong Kong public.

Ministers from Belgium include:

  • Kris Peeters, Minister-President of the Government of Flanders – Belgium
  • Jean-Claude Marcourt, Vice-President of the Government of Wallonia – Belgium
  • Céline Fremault, Minister of the Government of the Brussels Capital Region – Belgium

Belgian Spirit is an initiative of the three Belgian regions of Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia. Established in 2011, Belgian Spirit promotes Belgian architecture, design and fashion in Asia through Business of Design Week (BoDW) in Hong Kong and other events. They aim to create and develop long‐term collaborations between Belgian designers and their Asian counterparts and clients.

Date Event and key highlights
3 Dec (Tues) Belgian Spirit Press Conference

  • Hosted by senior Ministers from Belgium, the press conference is a prelude to the BoDW events and an introduction to the best of Belgian design.

 

4 Dec (Wed) Afternoon Tea Cocktail with Michelin-star Chef

  • An afternoon cocktail session that showcases the Belgian fish industry. Officials and an overseas Michelin-star chef will be present

Opening Reception of ‘Dress Code’ and ‘Design in Motion’ Exhibitions

  • Venue: Hong Kong Design Institute
  • Ministers of Belgian Regions of Brussels, Flanders & Wallonia will be present to celebrate the Exhibition opening. There will also be a guided tour, led by the curators, that will allow media to soak up the Belgian design world. 

Dress Code (December 2013 to March 2014) – an event showcasing Belgian fashion at Hong Kong Design Institute, which is curated by Charles Kaisin, the world-class Belgian designer. A selection of 50 top designers’ personal collections will be exhibited.

Design in Motion (December 2013 to March 2014) – an exhibition presenting all the work and research of Charles Kaisin from 1999through 2013 around motion and recycling.

 

5 Dec (Thurs) ‘Surreal Dinner’

  • Belgium offers 120 local VIP guests a taste of Belgian Haute Cuisine, featuring a blend of Belgian surrealism and Alice in Wonderland. Chef Pascal Devalkeneer (a 2 Michelin Star-chef at Le Chalet de la Forêt in Brussels) will lead the kitchen team in cooperation with HK-based Belgian chef Philippe Moriau. The dream dinner will be served on a 30-meter long table, with the Ministers and renowned designers all present.

 

5-7 Dec (Thurs to Sat) ‘The House of Belgian Spirit’ and ‘Tales of Heroes’ Exhibition

  • Venue: HKTDC InnoDesign Tech Expo
  • A Belgian pavilion named “The House of Belgian Spirit” will be built at the Expo and present Belgium’s cutting edge design concepts, products and services. 45 objects by Belgian designershave been selected for display at the exhibition.  Each is attributed a hero’s role in various narratives and alongside one another in a broader cultural context. Come and experience a contemporary impression of Belgium combined with a sense of nostalgia, with more than 20 Belgian companies, designers and brands marching into the exhibition hall with great pride. 

Belgian Track at BoDW Forum:  ‘This is not Design – This is Belgian Spirit’

  • Venue: HKTDC
  • A series of seminars featuring up-and-coming or niche speakers from Belgium.

To keep the Belgian Spirit sparkling, a host of other events will be held throughout December and  beyond, including:

  • In Bed with Designers, 30 November to 1 December 2013 – a mini hotel will be created by setting up a showroom and a pop up design boutique displaying the work of promising designers.
  • Detour Matters29 November to 8 December 2013 – a city-wide campaign deploying creativity within our public transport system and infrastructure.
  • Chai Wan Mei x Belgian Spirit, 8 December 2013  An event bringing together fashion designers, interior designers, booksellers, photographers, art galleries and cafes.  The open studio event will offer the public the chance to explore the hidden creative ecosystem of the industrial Chai Wan neighborhood.
  • Manneken Pis in the City12 December to 2 February 2014 – Hong Kongers will enjoy an extraordinary treasure hunt, discovering Belgian designs and products around town.  A Facebook competition will be held, with entrants uploading photos taken with the Manneken Pis statues and Belgian products they discovered in various shops in Hong Kong. Amazing prizes will include Belgian products, vouchers or a 3-day trip to Belgium!
  • 2013 Shenzhen-Hong Kong BiennaleDecember 2013 to February 2014 – Belgian architecture will be presented at the event, featuring the work of twenty young Belgian architects.
