The Classic Musical Les Misérables Returns to Broadway

Les Misérables, the new production of the Tony Award-winning classic musical, officially opened on Broadway yesterday, March 23, 2014.

Produced by the acclaimed Cameron Macintosh, Les Misérables is based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel and is an epic, uplifting story about the survival of the human spirit. The score of Les Misérables includes the classic songs “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Stars,” “Bring Him Home,” “Do You Hear the People Sing?,” “One Day More,” “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables,” “Master Of The House” and many more.

“I feel really blessed that not only has my new production of Les Misérablesbeen embraced by audiences and critics alike, even more fervently than the original, but Phil Smith and Bob Wankel of The Shubert Organization have kindly arranged for me to bring Cosette back to her spiritual home on Broadway, the Imperial Theatre,” said Cameron Mackintosh. “This magnificent theatre has the perfect blend of scale and intimacy for a story like Les Misérables, and I can’t wait to put together a brilliant company to bring this great 153168_num458908musical to new generations of Broadway audiences.”

Les Misérables opened on screen in 2012 and grossed $438 million worldwide. The film received the Golden Globe Award for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, winning three. The film’s soundtrack debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Album chart and has sold over 2 million copies worldwide.

The original New York production of Les Misérables premiered first at the Broadway Theatre on March 12, 1987, later moving to the Imperial Theater on October 17, 1990, where it played until May 18, 2003, for a total Broadway run of 6680 performances.
