Since opening its doors at 53 Gertrude Street Fitzroy in 2015, Marion has become a popular neighbourhood wine bar and destination for lovers of good food and great wine. list at Marion is an exciting mix of ever-changing small producers, limited volume releases and boasts access to some benchmark classics from Australia and around the world. In order to extend the Marion experience to the home, the team has introduced the Deadman’s Dozen.

Curated by Liam O’Brien, wine buyer for both Cutler & Co. and Marion, together with the entire wine team at Marion, The Deadman’s Dozen shares the excitement of their favourite wines each month. The selection is a true example of new discoveries. The monthly round-up of 12 different wines represent not only the energy of Marion but, like the wine bar itself, offers a complete contrast of varietals. Represented in the selection are up-and-coming new wave Australian wine producers as well as benchmark classics from near and far. Showcased wines include a mix of red, white, rose and sparkling – all by interesting growers and covering a wide range of methods such as low contact, old world techniques and skin contact wines. Each month the team thoughtfully curates a selection of 12 bottles offering a combination of different styles and influences.

The monthly dozen is available to collect from Marion and the team will be delighted to discuss the selection and why they love it so much. To ensure a Marion at home experience, each monthly dozen also comes with tasting notes and some background on each bottle.

The dozen retails at an affordable price of $270 (that’s $22.50 per bottle).

“We have an incredible team who are pretty much consumed by the offering we have”, explains Liam O’Brien. “Our wine discussion and tastings are full of opinion and energy and can get pretty intense. The Deadman’s Dozen is a direct result of those tastings and tensions run high to what does (and does not) go on the list”.

The name Deadman’s Dozen is taken from the laneway that Marion resides on – Deadman’s Lane. In the early 20th century, the streets and laneways surrounding Marion were once home to many dubious drinking establishments. They were also the scene of numerous underworld shootouts and other illegal goings-on. The laneway earned itself the rather self-explanatory moniker due to the many casualties found there at the time.

The Deadman’s Dozen is available as an ongoing monthly subscription, or as an individual package. It can be picked up from Marion or delivered to metro Melbourne locations.
