The Downtown Alliance is Tackling the Snow… Again!

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for New York City and surrounding areas. It will begin at midnight and continue through Friday morning. The alert forecasts accumulations of 6 to 10 inches with winds of 15 to 25 mph.

The Alliance for Downtown New York will be on the streets. Working with the city and local businesses and residents, our 56-member sanitation crew is prepared to tackle the snow in several phases.

As the snow begins to fall throughout the district, they will spread snowmelt at crosswalks, bus stops, subway entrances and exits and sidewalks near vacant lots (the snowmelt is environmentally friendly and does not erode concrete). As the snow accumulates, the teams will deploy “mechanized snow brushes”  — an attachment interchanged with a snow plow. Next, come the shovels and manually operated power plows for heavier snow.  After that, snow blowers are revved up to cut through dense piles. The Alliance even has a mechanized, John Deere snow plow, which we use to clear snow blocking corners at intersections.

Our Downtown Connection bus service will remain in regular operation as long as the buses can run safely throughout the storm, and we will continue removing snow at bus stops along the routes.  The Downtown Alliance will also respond to complaints, dispatching teams to tackle problems as they develop. Check our website for updates on the operation of our buses throughout the storm.

We ask that everyone use caution when walking outside and encourage local businesses and residents to help make sure the sidewalks in front of your properties remain clear.

Please pay particular care as you move around the area. Remember that there may be ice patches from previous storms hidden by fresh snow.
