The Gathering Ireland – July Update

With an extensive programme of gatherings (4,000+) big and small, 2013 has shaped up to be one heck of a party on the Emerald Isle. 650 Gatherings took place in June and there are over 1,200 scheduled to take place in July and August. From Flypasts to cricket to special offer phone applications, the Gathering Ireland has something for everyone.
Indications are that the Gathering is succeeding in delivering on its goal of attracting additional overseas visitors to Ireland with figures indicating that total overseas trips to Ireland for the period Jan-May 2013 were up by 6.4% and that on the corresponding period last year. Australian visitors to the Republic of Ireland for Jan – May grew by +12.1% year on year.

Gathering Gestures App.
‘The Gathering Gestures App‘ is available for iphone and android users. The app. offers over 500 unique offers to visitors to Ireland, providing special ‘Gathering’ offers and complimentary value add-ons to make your trip to Ireland all the more enjoyable. For example, some car hire companies are offering free satellite navigation systems with car rental; several hotels are offering free cocktails or mocktails. There are also complimentary home baked goods on arrival in B&Bs, play a 4 Ball for the price of 2 at Rathsallagh House and much more.

The 15th of September will see a very innovative Gathering take to the skies of Dublin City. FlightFest is an once-in-a-lifetime international aviation flypast that has never been achieved by any other European City. The skies of Dublin will be embellished with 30 plus modern and vintage aircraft for this aviation extravaganza. Carnival spirit will also hit Dublin with family attractions and festivities lining the city streets showcasing the best of Irish aviation and promising a fun filled day out for all. Explore Irish Identity with a Free Online Course
Hibernia College, in association with The Gathering, has launched the first ever Irish Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on the theme of Irish identity. The Exploring Irish Identity MOOC is available to everybody completely free of charge, no matter where you are in the world. All you need is access to the Internet and a desire to find out more about Ireland’s culture and heritage.

The Barmy vs. Blarney Army (September 2nd- 3rd)
This September, Malahide will host the biggest cricket match ever to be held on the island of Ireland for the epic international between Ireland and England. The new all-seater venue in Malahide will welcome over 12,000 visitors for this epic showdown. Lining out for the English Squad is Irish born, Eoin Morgan who once played for the Irish squad so rivalry will be ripe between both sides. To add further competitive spirit to the mix, the official gathering component to the match will see the Barmy Army (England Cricket Supporters) take on the Blarney Army (Irish Cricket Supporters) in a charity match on the eve of the big game. Cork Rebel Week
County Cork, affectionately known as ‘The Rebel County‘ is set to host the first ever Cork Rebel Week from the 14th to the 20th of October 2013. The week of festivities will commemorate all things Cork related including the County’s infamous rebellious reputation. The organisers are also issuing Cork Rebel Week Passports to international visitors. The passport entitles holders to a range of accommodation, hospitality, retail and leisure discounts, as well special offers across Cork during Rebel Week.
