The Grand Nusantara Art and Cultural Parade 2014

Taking place in  the capital city of Jakarta on Monday, 18th August 2014, the Grand Nusantara Art and Cultural Parade 2014 was held in celebration of  the  69th  anniversary of indonesia’s Proclamation of  Independence on 17 August 1945.

The Parade drew huge crowds as it  involved all 33 provinces of Indonesia who showcased some of their finest cultural treasures from across the archipelago. The event was officially opened by the President of Republic Indonesia, Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the courtyard of the Istana Merdeka Presidential Palace.

The panel of judges selected 10 representative  provinces displaying  the best performances, they are: East Java, Jakarta, Bali,Central Java, Yogyakarta, Central Kalimantan, Jambi, East Kalimantan, Lampung, and West Java. The ten provinces were awarded with a trophy and certificate which were directly handed over to the winners  by President Yudhoyono.

The winning  provinces did not only present their  distinct traditional costumes and dance choreographies, but combined them with the region’s icons. For example, West Java presented the bull, Jakarta came with their  comical Ondel-ondel giant puppets , while  Bali featured  the. Iconic Garuda Bird and elaborated their performance in a thematic plot.

Other floats  also mesmerized  the audience with colorful and creative decorative designs and colors. The processions of Reog Ponorogo dancers , the Little Police, the  Garuda Indonesia Contingent,and the  Marching Band, also received roaring applause.

Minister for  Tourism and Creative Economy, Mari Elka Pangestu, confirmed that  the Grand Nusantara Art and Cultural Parade will be held annually to showcase the wide range of cultural diversity of Indonesia.

This year, carrying the theme “Indonesia Unite”, total parade  participants came to  3,479 dancers and musicians and about 1, 000 other  supporting performers.

“The theme illustrates the concept of “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika”, Indonesia’s national motto meaning: “Unity in Diversity”, the  national  unity among the  diverse ethnic groups living in Indonesia, unity to preserve the country’s natural and human resources, and  unity to meet the best in  quality” added the minister.

The Grand Nusantara Art and Cultural Parade 2014, commenced from the courtyard of the Istana Merdeka Presidential Palace, then continued to the North Gate of the National Monument (Monas), Medan Merdeka Barat Street, Medan Merdeka Selatan Street, before returning to Monas. The Parade took place from 15.00 to 18.00 West Indonesia Time, with  enthusiastic cheers  from the crowds lining the streets.
