Whether it’s because of the country’s isolation or just the inimitable spirit of its citizens, Australia has long-been at the forefront of innovation in a surprising array of gadgets and technologies.

So from appliances that keep the beers chilled, to innovations in online casino technology, here are some of the great Australian inventions of all-time.

You probably wouldn’t be reading this if it wasn’t for the boffins in a Canberra research facility who developed Wi-Fi so that we could all access digital information with the need for cables.

That a group of Australians were at the forefront of the online revolution may surprise some, but Australia has been key in supplying us with new entertainment technologies too.

As well as delivering the world’s first full-length feature film with 1905’s The Story of the Kelly Gang, Australians also introduced the first use of the clapperboard, and even brought us into the world of digital music thanks to the Fairlight CMI digital sampler that was developed in Sydney.

Digital entertainment has also been advanced through gaming companies such as Melbourne’s Tantalus Studios who have been making great inroads in Wii-U technology. And special mention must be made for Lucky Nugget who have helped people pick an Australian online casino that offers a massive range of roulette, poker and blackjack games, all from the convenience of a mobile device.

The fact that the site allows gamers to overcome physical distance to play casino games could have been a similar inspiration to allow Lawrence Hargrave to develop the world’s first instance of powered flight whilst in New South Wales.

Other Australian innovations that have had surprising effects in aeronautical affairs include the introduction of the black box recorder that helps investigators find the possible cause of an aircrash. And modern warfare was given a massive addition to its arsenal when the Australian Lance de Mole developed the blueprints for the very first tank.

Even in the realm of health there have been some interesting Australian innovation. Seeing an child in utero has become almost taken for granted now, but it took the Australians David Robinson and George Kossoff to create this ground-breaking technology.

And with many other incredible Australian innovations including the first plastic spectacles, the introduction of pacemakers, as well as the pioneering work in the creation of refrigerators, it’s clear to see why Australia has such a great reputation for its inventions.

But with the rest of the world still to discover the unknown pleasures of Vegemite, it’s up to the nation’s online casinos, Wi-Fi and aircraft to herald Australia’s immense innovation.
