The Hot 5: your guide to Lake Macquarie’s ultimate selfie spots

Known for its natural beauty and unique hangouts, quirky Lake Mac creates the best backdrops for ultimate selfies. Take advantage of the location, capture the memory and excite your followers.

In front of the Café Macquarie Mural

The brainchild of former owners Ana and Sam Benson, the celebrated Café Macquarie Mural – featuring a riot of colourful creatures – is part of the Block by Block Belmont Art Walk, a community project to combat unsightly graffiti and promote the creations of talented street artists from the local area, and beyond.

Snap a selfie in front of a panda, giraffe, snake or sea creature – whatever takes your fancy – but you’ll have to strike a serious pose to stand out from this crowd…

From a helicopter, high in the sky

The action-loving team at Skyline Aviation offer tailor-made scenic flights designed to show off aerial views of the wonderful waterways in and around Lake Macquarie, Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. Snap a selfie from the chopper window with the stunning ocean, cliffs or inland forests below as a backdrop and you’ll be the envy of all your land-dwelling selfie-obsessed friends…

On the sands at Catherine Hill Bay

Home to a heritage-listed mining village and a glorious beach twice named among Australia’s 101 best, Catherine Hill Bay boasts selfie-spots galore, as well as terrific surfing, fishing, swimming and chilling.

Whether you take a pic in front of the shore break (a number of surf flicks have been filmed here), from the iconic former coal-loading jetty (go black and white for true retro chic), in the untouched village or sunbathing in style, it’s long been a favourite with local photographers…but now their secret’s out!

Sunset at beautiful Belmont Wharf

Enjoying an idyllic location on the eastern shore of lovely Lake Macquarie, Belmont is home to delectable waterfront restaurants and a foreshore that’s a favourite for family picnics.

Home to the Lake Macquarie Yacht Club and Belmont’s wetlands – a haven for bird species and beloved by cyclists and walkers – there are countless photo hotspots to try. From the pathway in the midst of the wetlands to posing with a fishing rod at 9 Mile Beach to a selfie with seafood dining alfresco or with sailing boats behind you at the yacht club…Belmont has it covered.

Gap Creek Falls

What says ‘cool and carefree’ better than a selfie snapped under the spray of a waterfall? Not much. Wander from the Gap Creek picnic area at the end of Bangalow Rd through the lush rainforest and past red cedars and a massive Illawarra flame tree (another selfie opportunity) through a fork in the road to the majestic Gap Creek Falls. Featuring a sheer 40-metre drop over a cliff face, it’s all the proof you need that nature is the best backdrop there is.
