With its incredible diversity of landscapes and some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the world – it’s no surprise that Kenya is where the concept of safari was born.

The jewel in its crown is the Masai Mara, the stage for the annual wildebeest migration when over two million wildebeest and zebra move between the Masai Mara and the Serengeti in Tanzania in search of greener pastures. It’s here that you’ll find Sanctuary Retreats’ tented safari camp, Sanctuary Olonana, winner of Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards 2016. Situated on a private stretch of the Mara River, Sanctuary Olonana offers an unforgettable experience in the heart of one of Africa’s most acclaimed national parks.

So what can you expect from a stay one of Kenya’s most outstanding safari camps?

Well it all starts with your flight into Kichwa Tembo Airstrip in the afternoon, where you’ll be greeted by your Sanctuary Retreats guide with some tempting light refreshments, before being driven the short distance Sanctuary Olonana. And be sure to keep a look out en route for some of the local wildlife for which the Mara is rightly famous!

Next up, check into your home away from home, a spacious and comfortable canvas tent, and discover the true meaning of ‘glamping’. With en-suite facilities, four-poster beds draped in mosquito nets and river-view verandas overlooking a pod of hippos, you’ll find it hard to leave. But once you have settled in, its time to explore the Camp library and the spectacular swimming pool, not to mention the main dining room and decking area with its commanding views over a dramatic stretch of the river. Even better, there’s complimentary Wi-Fi available in all rooms and the main communal areas so you can upload lots of images of your exclusive luxury safari hideaway on Instagram.

Then, when you’ve finished inciting a little ‘vacation envy’ amongst friends and family, sit back and relax with a cocktail on the deck and take in the views of the infamous Mara River while you prepare yourself for a full day of safari tomorrow.

After an early wake-up call accompanied by a warming cup of tea, rug up for your dawn hot air balloon safari. Bask in the early morning sunshine as you float gently over the plains above a plethora of game, before landing and enjoying a champagne breakfast to toast your flight.

Back in Camp, indulge in some pampering at the mini-spa which offers a range of treatments from facials to body massages, before enjoying a delicious lunch out on the deck. Or, if you are feeling more adventurous, arrange for Head Chef, Big John, to prepare you a picnic featuring some of the wonderful fresh produce picked straight from the Camp’s organic garden.

After lunch, it’s off to join an experienced Maasai guide and explore a nearby village where you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in the vibrant and traditional Maasai way of life. Afterwards, there’s still plenty of time to relax with a book by the camp’s swimming pool, before setting out on your afternoon safari. The Maasai Mara is the ideal place for seeing big cats and all of the ‘big five’ and lots of other plains game, not to mention over 300 species of bird. And because the plains offer such a rich variety of food for dominant predators including lion, leopard, hyena and cheetah, there are always plenty of amazing sightings to be had all year round.

The perfect way to end your day, traditional ‘sundowners’ are served on the Mara plains and, if you want it, a private bush dinner too. Dine in style amid flickering candlelight as stars shine overhead – and know there is simply no better way to absorb all the peace, beauty and tranquillity of the African Savannah.
