The lust list: Mykonos’ top ten Instagram-able locations & experiences

Boasting more Insta-appeal than almost anywhere in the world, the ultra-glam Greek island of Mykonos is a favourite on social media platforms for its laidback luxury vibe which contrasts azure waters, windswept beaches, decadent pools and waterfront dining with cobbled streets, authentic tavernas and historic white-washed buildings.http://www.stevecafeandcuisine.com/

A recent study, the Goldman Group Australian Luxury Traveller 2019 Report, revealed that more than one third of Australian travellers get holiday inspiration from scrolling social media feeds and enjoy posting about their adventures online. Joint-managing director Anthony Goldman says these days it’s all about the Insta-feed.

“Generation Z, also known as the ‘iGeneration’, are increasingly seeking exotic destinations and active experiences based on others’ travels documented on Instagram, saying their travel decisions are influenced by social media, online reviews, friends’ recommendations and shares.

“As a platform, Instagram has significantly influenced the way younger generations research and undertake travel.  As a result, we’ve seen hotels worldwide striving to become the most photogenic and Instagram-able accommodation providers for 2019, and beyond,” says Mr Goldman.

To ensure you capture the most enviable spots on the island, we’ve compiled a list of the ten most Instagram-able spots on magical Mykonos, so scroll on down and start exploring the hotspots where Mykonos memories are made…

  1. LITTLE VENICE

One of Mykonos’ favourite waterfront districts, Little Venice is home to charming restaurants, bars, cafes and boutiques and is a top spot to capture the island’s village ambience, enjoy drinks on one of the beautiful balconies overlooking the sea, or experience a legendary Mykonos pink sunset.

  1. GEORGE’S BAR AT MYCONIAN KYMA

Attracting a jet-set clientele bewitched by the hotel’s famous views of Little Venice and the windmills, the original George’s Bar is hip yet unpretentious and one of the island’s original spots to see and be seen.

  1. #HAPPINESS

It might be a tiny store but #Happiness has become a huge Instagram hit. Tucked away among the cobblestone streets of Mykonos Town, if you want to snap a selfie solo you’ll need to head out early before your fellow travellers wake up.

  1. PSAROU & PLATIS GIALOS

More chilled than Mykonos’ iconic party beaches, Psarou and Platis Gialos are a five-minute walk apart and perfect for snapping crystal clear waters, selfies on a sun lounger, or family action pics thanks to the myriad water sports on offer. There’s plenty of Insta-inspiration at the Myconian Ambassador Hotel, just steps from the sand of Platis Gialos, where a candlelit dinner at one of the island’s top tables, Efisia Relais & Châteaux is an essential experience in any Mykonos itinerary.

  1. THE OLD PORT, MYKONOS TOWN

People watching is popular pastime at Mykonos’ old port, which blends narrow winding streets lined with white-washed houses, cafes and shops, with the comings and goings of catamarans, cruise ships, colourful fishing boats and sunset sailing cruises on the water. Another favourite spot to score that coveted pink sunset snap.

  1. PHENOMENAL POOLS

The magnificent infinity pools of the Myconian Collection of boutique hotels across Mykonos have become renowned as offering some of the most sought-after spots for a social media snap, thanks to their decadent decks, sublime sun loungers and brilliant blue-on-blue views from the pool down to the sea below.

From mirrored surfaces to underwater bars, waterfalls and glittering LED lights at night, these are no ordinary pools, and the poolside bars and attentive service make it easy for days to disappear into nights without leaving your poolside post. Favourites include the pools at the Royal Myconian Resort, Myconian Imperial Resort, Myconian Ambassador Hotel, Myconian Avaton Resort, Myconian Villa Collection and Myconian Utopia Resort.

  1. WINDMILLS

One of the most recognisable landmarks on Mykonos, known by the locals as the Island of Winds, is its row of 16th century windmills, perched high on a hill above Mykonos Town (Chora) and enjoying a commanding view of the spectacular Alefkandra Harbour and Aegean Sea below. Known as one of the best spots from which to watch a gorgeous Greek Isles sunset, you’ll need to climb the hill early to snap a sunset selfie. Otherwise, to capture a more serene sunrise story for your Insta account, climb the hill early in the morning.

  1. CHORA – MYKONOS TOWN

Boasting the prettiest palette of blues and whites, together with bursts of bright bougainvillea, Mykonos Town, or Chora, is the spot to snap historic churches, hip boutiques, lively eateries and myriad maze-like cobbled streets – each one more picture-perfect than the next. Keep an eye out for the famous brightly coloured doorways, winding stairways and wandering cats – all waiting to star in your next Instagram story.

  1. PANAGIA PARAPORTIANI

On the edge of the lively Kastro district by the sea stands one of the most photographed churches (or group of churches) not just in Mykonos, but anywhere. It’s easy to see how Panagia Paraportiani’s glorious white-washed good looks have made it a social media star.

  1. SUNSET TERRACE AT ROYAL MYCONIAN

Sink into a sofa on the panoramic Sunset Terrace at Royal Myconian, high above Elia Beach, and capture the changing views over the pool and Aegean as day sinks into night. Remember to snap a few of the cocktails too.
