The Margaret River region comes alive for all lovers of art in April and May, with the popular Open Studios event, an amazing celebration of art in the region.
The Margaret River Region Open Studios enters its sixth year in 2019, bringing with it even more of the regions most talented and up and coming artists. The event sees over 100 artists from Busselton to Augusta open their studio doors to art loving visitors and locals alike.
This free event will invite art lovers to experience at the work of artists from many disciplines including glassblowers, sculptors, jewellers, painters, illustrators, photographers, print makers and more.
This is a unique opportunity for a behind-the-scenes experience at private art studios, and offers the chance to meet established and emerging artists in the region.
Here’s a look at just some of the diverse participants that are opening their studios to the public.
Furniture Design
Nathan Day is a furniture designer and maker, who believes in the art that is bespoke handcrafted timber pieces. With over 20 years spent honing his craft, including as an apprentice to a master craftsman and spending time with some of the best furniture makers in England, Nathan’s work appeals to the minimalist in all of us, while showcasing the natural beauty of the timber he is working with.
Nathan’s studio in Vasse is open daily from 10am-4pm throughout the event.
Textiles
Textile makers are often left out of art events, but this year, the Margaret River Region Open Studios has been joined by emerging textile artist, Lee Nash. With a passion for spinning, felting, weaving and dyeing, Lee has recently opened her new studio in Quindalup. With plenty of experimentation, Lee has been working with and creating felted sculptures using a range of materials, as well as creating wearable items.
Lee’s studio is open on various dates throughout the event; check the website or program when planning your trip.
Mixed Media
Helen Bos’s art is a mixed bag of drawing, mixed media, printmaking and painting. Growing up across South Africa, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and now living in the Margaret River region, Helen certainly has plenty of inspiration to draw upon. Helen utilises mathematics in her work, exploring the significance of numbers in our everyday life and its connection to the world around us.
Extensively travelling to learn more about her chosen styles of art, Helen draws inspiration from the world around her, and has a commitment to preserving the tradition crafts of printmaking, bookbinding and mathematics.
Open daily from 10am – 5pm throughout the event, Helen’s studio is located just south of Stonefish Wines in Wilyabrup.

Glassblowing
Glassblowing is a fascination for people from around the world. The skill required to produce beautiful pieces of art takes years to master, and here in the Margaret River region we are lucky to have an amazing glass artist in Gerry Reilly. Working with hot glass for over 40 years, Gerry’s designs are inspired by the landscapes surrounding him, while the changing seasons can be seen his in work.
Outside the studio, Gerry’s work can be found in Perth’s intercontinental Hotel (glass installation in the foyer, glass and limestone sculptures on the top floor and platters in every suite), and in the Locker Room Bar of the new Optus Stadium as a ceiling installation.
Gerry’s studio, Melting Pot Glass Studio is open on various days throughout the event. Pop in and see Gerry at work or book into a workshop where you can experience working with hot glass for .

Event Details
The Margaret River Region Open Studios is set to be a great event. Opening the 27th of April and running through until the 12th of May, no bookings are needed, and each open studio is free to attend.
