566482Nyepi ( is one of the most important and sacred holidays in the Balinese Hindu calendar signifying the end of the old year and the start of a new one.

It is a day of reflection where noises are kept to a minimum throughout the island. The myth and belief behind Nyepi is that on this day, the evil spirits descend onto Bali and when they see that it is uninhabited, they leave the island alone for another year.

No major activities, noise or public transport (including airplanes at the airport) will be allowed on the island for 24 hours, starting from 06:00 of March 31st, 2014 to 06:00 of the following day. Travellers are recommended to arrive two to three days prior to Nyepi Day to fully immerse into this holistic meditation experience.
