Juweira Boutique HotelAccording to official estimates, tourism was the second largest contributor to Oman’s GDP at 6.6 per cent in 2012, a figure which is expected to rise to 10 per cent by 2020.
Riding on the tourism wave is Muriya, a leading tourism development company in the Middle East, with the launch of its five- star hotel, the Salalah Rotana Resort, last month. The new resort, which has 400 rooms, is spread over 15.6mn sq m, with an 8km beach front.

This is Muriya’s second hotel in Salalah after Juweira Boutique Hotel, which opened two years ago. Muriya plans to develop five more hotels as part of the Salalah Beach project, which will take the total number of projects there to seven.

Salalah Resort EntrySamih Sawiris, chairman, Muriya and CEO of Orascom Development, said “Oman has an amazing potential, which is barely tapped. The resort will serve the demand for high-quality accommodation in Salalah as tourism continues to grow in the city.”

Sawiris said that Salalah Rotana Resort is not just a resort and they are planning to build a small town, replicating what they have done at El Gouna in Egypt.

“There are 25,000 people residing and working in El Gouna and I hope to replicate that model here in Salalah. My plan is not to build a couple of hotels, but to use these hotels to create jobs and demand for tourism. The local community should benefit from the hotel,” he said. Hamza Selim, CEO of Muriya, said that the resort will make a major contribution to the local community by providing job opportunities for Omanis.

“The Salalah Rotana Resort will gradually develop to become a part of an integrated town, which will make a major contribution to the number of quality assets in the sultanate’s portfolio and put Salalah on the map as a global tourism destination,” he said.

Salalah Rotana SuiteSalalah Rotana Resort will be managed by Rotana Hotels, a leading hotel management company in the Middle East. This marks Rotana’s entry into Oman as part of its aggressive global expansion plans to develop six new properties, with over 1,400 rooms due to open in this year. This is the 50th hotel to be operated by Rotana and represents the half-way mark as it plans for 100 hotels by 2020.

“We are excited to begin a new journey today at the first hotel to be operated by Rotana in Oman. The country has always been a key growth market for us to expand and we pride ourselves in identifying new travel destinations for people who wish to travel places. Salalah has been growing in popularity,” said Omer Kaddouri, president and CEO of Rotana.

The resort has four restaurants, including an all-day dining restaurant and a beach restaurant. The hotel has several meeting rooms, a business centre, a fitness centre and massage services. It also has a large outdoor pool, and a kids’ club. It also has the Zen spa – Rotana’s home-grown spa concept derived from ancient holistic Asian philosophies.

Salalah Rotana Resort’s opening is in line with the Ministry of Tourism’s strategy to strengthen Oman’s reputation as a luxury hospitality haven. It comes at a time when the tourism sector in Oman is booming with Salalah being at the forefront of it due to the additional support from international cruise liners.

Muriya is a joint venture created in 2006 between Orascom Development Holdings and Omran, the tourism development arm of the government. Apart from the Salalah Beach project, Muriya has three other projects in Oman, including Jebel Sifah and City Walk in the capital area. It is also building a resort on Sodah Island, which is spread over an area of 1mn sq m. The resort will have 32 luxury villas for rent, each with its own individual private beach access.
