The Olsen is excited to announce that they are one of the exhibition partners of the John Olsen: The You Beaut Country exhibition, showing at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia from 16 September 2016.
The exhibition will be a celebration of the career of one of Australia’s greatest living artists, Dr. John Olsen AO OBE.
Visitors and locals alike will have the opportunity to truly immerse themselves in Olsen’s art by purchasing the ‘John Olsen You Beaut’ package, running for the length of the exhibition. This package will include a sleepover in the creature comforts of The Olsen, two complimentary Dr. John Olsen cocktails from Spoonbill Restaurant and Bar, an in house art tour and two tickets to the exhibition at the NGV. The hotel’s restaurant,Spoonbill, was named after the bird that features in a number of Olsen’s paintings and the menu draws on his passion for local produce and his Mediterranean travels, with ‘John Olsen’s Famous Paella’ a hero dish.
Exclusive to Art Series Hotel Group, a signed limited edition giclee print of Olsen’s 2014 Paella Marinara will be available to purchase from their online store, Artefacts. Paella has been a reoccurring theme in the artist’s work since he first learnt to cook the dish in Spain in the late 1950’s.
John Olsen: The You Beaut Country will be the most comprehensive survey exhibition of Olsen’s work to date and a celebration of his remarkable 70-year career. Pieces from his early You Beaut Country series, will hang alongside some of his most iconic and arresting works, including large-scale paintings of Lake Eyre, the Simpson Desert, Sydney Harbour and his much-loved tree frogs. The latest instalment of Olsen’s career-defining landscapes series, You Beaut Country, will be unveiled in this Australian premiere exhibition. This series followed Olsen’s return to Australia in 1960 after three years travelling through Europe and began his lifelong interest in the natural world and his continued pursuit to capture the Australian identity.
The survey exhibition will also reflect Olsen’s other varied interests, including Spanish cooking and culture, poetry and journal writing, as well as the diverse use of mediums in his practice, including tapestries, printmaking, ceramics and sculpture.
Named after and inspired by the national treasure, The Olsen gives guests a rare chance to get up close and personal with original pieces of his work. Located on the prestigious Chapel Street in South Yarra, the hotel features original art and giclee prints throughout. A highlight is the impressive six metre mural, titled The Yellow Sun and The Yarra that greets guests in the lobby and was commissioned especially for the property.
John Olsen: The You Beaut Country is on display at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square from 16 September 2016 – 12 February 2017. It will then open at the Art Gallery of New South Wales on 10 March 2017.
