The Philippines’ First Ever Female Craft Brewers

June 1, 2017 Beverage No Comments Email Email

Palaweño Brewery is the first craft beer brewery in Palawan and offers guests the first microbrewery tour in the Philippines.  Palaweño Brewery is a traditional brewery crafting a range of beers, incorporating local and international flavours.  The brewery provides visitor tours six days a week, Monday to Saturday from 1 – 9pm, offering those the chance to learn more about the brewing process, all whilst taste testing the delicious range of beers produced.  The two founders, Ayah Javier and Malu Lauengco, are also the first female craft beer brewers in the Philippines.

Malu says “Ayah and I are truly honoured to be Palawan’s first and only craft beer brewery.  Our passion is what drives us to keep striving forward, and to produce the best beer we can.  The beer is crafted using our island’s bountiful indigenous ingredients such as coconut, mango, “tangguli” (palm candi) and a lot more.”

Ayah explains, “The idea came to me when I was overseas, when a friend introduced me to craft beer.  I came back home to the Philippines with a home brewer’s kit.  It’s hard to believe that from those humble beginnings in our little kitchen, we have grown to Palawan’s first brewery and the first female craft beer brewers in the Philippines.”

Palaweño Brewery is the first micro-brewery to run tours in the Philippines.  The tours feature Craft Beer 101, interactive presentations, games and daily food and beer pairings.

At present, the micro-brewery produces 300 cases of beer per month, which are currently sold in bars, hotels and restaurants around Palawan, Manila, Cebu and Iloilo.  Palaweño Brewery is still traditional, with the team filling bottles by hand and crafting and labelling the bottles on site.  Due to the growing demand, the brewery is currently in the process of upscaling to a bigger brewhouse.

The Philippines’ brewing duo create seasonal brews throughout the year, in addition to the main brews available.  Hunter Honey Nut Brown is popular within the local market, it is a nut brown ale incorporating wild Palawan honey.  The other main brews on offer include: Ambog Ale American Amber Ale; Palawan Wit Belgian Wheat Beer; Palaw’an Honey Kolsch; and Ayahay IPA India Pale Ale.
