Autumn isn’t just the cool season, it’s also the marathon season. As you and your friends are working hard for your pre-marathon trainings,™ has released data* revealing a new wave of young travellers who are looking for action-packed, celebrity-inspired fitness getaways.

Results from the Activacations Survey show that a whopping 79% of 18-34 year olds in Hong Kong now consider keeping fit one of the most important parts of their holiday experience. Hongkongers are also doubly active while on a trip, as they would spend an average of two hours exercising daily while on vacation compared to less than one hour at home!

The survey carried out by travel experts shows that the rise of the ‘activacation’ is also down to a barrage of social media ‘fitfluencers’. Millennial travellers from Hong Kong, especially younger millennials aged 18 – 24, exercise to make themselves feel better (51%), and they also love themselves a little bragging rights. On vacations, they share their photos to create unique memories (33%)impress their stuck-at-home friends (28%) and prove that they’re making the most of their holiday on social media (28%). Many also want to capture their fitness in a nice setting so they can look back with a smile(23%).

Fitness is now so ingrained in the holiday experience, demand for superior fitness experiences from hotels has also reached a new high. Young Hongkongers are highly price conscious as well, as they find hotels with free exercise facilities (63%)  the most enticing. Post-exercise massages are also incredibly important to them (51%), which ranked higher than special diets(30%) and complimentary gym classes (26%).

The preferences for exercise on holiday are quite similar between men and women in Hong Kong. Even for more extreme physical activities such as cross-fit and beach boot-camp, men only edge out by a few percent. The only major difference is that Hong Kong men are not interested in yoga (13%) or dance classes (5%), whereas the ladies have no problems with them(30% and 26% respectively).

The top five activities travellers would be prepared to try are:

  • Running (70%)
  • Hiking/walking (59%)
  • Swimming (49%)
  • Aerobics (46%)
  • Cycling (40%)

Jessica Chuang, Regional Marketing Director of Greater China, Southeast Asia and India from brand said: “We love that people are seeing sport as a way to have more rewarding holiday experiences. There’s been a real evolution in holiday priorities and millennial travellers in particular now demand more from a trip. They want deals and perks when they book, like collecting a free night for every 10 nights stayed with Rewards**, and fulfilling experiences where they see destinations from a fresh and unique perspective. Social media plays a key role too, as travellers want to share their life in the touch of a button, and fitness is the latest trend they’re embracing and instagramming.”

There are quite a number of marathons coming up, and many of them are organised in some of Hongkongers’ favourite cites. Marathon runners in Hong Kong should take note of the following events: Bangkok Marathon 30th will be held on 19 November, 2017; Chosunilbo Chunchon International Marathon in South Korea will be held on 29 October, 2017; Taipei Marathon 2017 will be held on 17 December, 2017; and Tokyo Marathon 2018 will be held on 25 February, 2018.

There’s no doubt that the importance of fitness and wellness are bigger priorities than ever before, and holidays are no exception. Fitness options are now so important that millennials are choosing hotels based on how they’ll help them keep fit on vacation – and hotels are really upping their game. There are some incredible opportunities for a completely individual activacation in Asia, and here are a few of the top picks by
