image017wine etc, prides itself on introducing premium wines to Hong Kong wine lovers and this month the spotlight is on Château d’Issan, the rising star of Bordeaux and one of the oldest wine producing properties in Medoc Bordeaux.

wine etc, Hong Kong’s leading retailer of premium wine, applauds the lesser known Bordeaux estate for producing competitively priced fine wines, perfect for both enjoyment and investment. Classified as Grand Cru, wines that are produced from Château d’Issan are affordable choices for wine lovers seeking a balance of good quality and value.

“Without doubt, d’Issan produces some of the most underrated wines in the region but they have won an increasing level of interest and appreciation in recent years. The Château Margaux and Château d’Issan properties once dominated the Bordeaux region, but quality fell in the early 20th Century until the estate was purchased by Emmanuel Cruse in 1945 who redefined the quality of d’Issan wines,” says Paulo Pong, Managing Director of Altaya Group.

A Château d’Issan vineyard

The 41 hectare vineyard of Château d’Issan has a terroir of gravel with clay based soils, planted at around 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Wines from castle d’Issan are known to be charming and complex with wide aromatic palette. Not only are they wines that are suitable for aging and marked by the characteristics of Margaux, but also wines that are delicate with good length.

The 1996 Château d’Issan (HKD 775) is a great example of the exemplary quality of d’Issan wines. The wine is dark and dense colour with a powerful blackberry nose, big mouthful of fruit, lovely soft tannins, and a massive structure. It is a wine to put away for the future.

A decade later, the 2006 Château d’Issan (HKD 689) is hot on the heels with a beautiful nose, full of mature fruits. On the palate it shows a perfect balance between strong tannins and complex aroma of red fruits. Typical of Margaux appellation, its elegance and finesse last long in mouth, to end on a very delicate note.

The 2008 wines are also worth exploring, with the 2008 Château d’Issan (HKD 545) a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot thatpresents very good structure and concentrated tannins. Everything is there to achieve the balance between finesse and power that is always sought.

The 2008 Blasson d’Issan (HKD 285) is a great example of a good quality Bordeaux wine available at an affordable price. With an expression of ripe, fully developed fruit it is a balanced wine with good richness and complexity.
