The Ritz-Carlton, Beijing Announces the Participation of Smile Asia Week in May to Support Operation Smile

The Ritz-Carlton, Beijing has announced the participation of Smile Asia Week from May 5 – 11, 2014 to sell specially-created cakes to raise funds for Operation Smile, an international children’s medical charity which helps give children worldwide with cleft lips or palates a reason to smile again.

The launch forms part of the ongoing commitment by The Ritz-Carlton to expand global citizenship through its Community Footprints program which encourages social and environmental responsibility.

“Embracing Community Footprints to enhance the lives and well-being of young people in our communities is at the very heart of our culture,” said Victor Clavell, Vice President – Asia-Pacific. “We were inspired and touched by the program’s success in The Ritz-TN-241054_international-hotel-in-beijingCarlton Millennia, Singapore. We could see our colleagues give their heart and time to supporting this initiative which last year helped 221 children with a simple life changing surgery, so we decided to expand its reach this year and engage the teams throughout Asia.”

Around 9,000 ladies and gentlemen in The Ritz-Carlton Hotels of Asia will take part in this drive to raise funds through the sale of a specially-crafted cake sold exclusively through the website of Operation Smile — www.smileasiaweek.org — with all proceeds going directly to the charity.

The celebration cakes can be used to celebrate special occasions amongst family and friends from Mother’s Day to anniversaries and birthdays. The website also allows friends and family from across the world to send the cake to their loved ones and friends in Asia.

Taking into account Beijing’s culture in taste and preference, at The Ritz-Carlton, Beijing, our new Pastry Executive Chef Jean-Luc selects the best ingredients to tailor make a Valhrona Chocolate and Banana Cake where palate meets richness, freshness and totally indulgence. He keeps the traditional taste in a modern twist presentation, combination of classic and contemporary way of baking for the perfection of the Valhrona Chocolate and Banana Cake, reflecting the universal popularity of chocolate to bring a smile to everyone’s face and banana being a flavor that appealed to children and adults alike.

From France, a country famous for dessert, Chef Jean-Luc has a natural talent for dessert and specializes in dessert design, production and creating personalized menus. He has served for many renowned celebrities and international brands during his career that leave guests with lasting memories.

Since 1982, Operation Smile has treated more than 200,000 children in 51 countries, free of charge, while training thousands of medical professionals in the process and leaving behind necessary equipment to foster long-term self- sufficiency.

Thanks to Operation Smile, more than 27,000 children and young adults in China have been treated for cleft lips and palates while in India, more than 15,000 individuals have been given a new lease of life. Children with clefts are often unable to eat, speak, socialize or smile. Operation Smile provides free surgeries to heal the smiles of children and transform their lives from as little as $800 USD per surgery.
