The 2017 Krakatau Granfondo, an international long-distance road bicycle ride, was hosted on Saturday March 25th 2017 by The Royale Krakatau Hotel Cilegon, in collaboration with PT Hiporia Event Management and PT Krakatau Steel’s Cycling Community, Gowes Halus. Spanning a distance of 136 km, Krakatau Granfondo’s route was comprised of various prominent tourism areas in Banten, such as Cilegon, Baduy, Cisadane river, Sawarna, and Carita Beach.

Head of Banten’s Tourism and Cultural Department, Eneng Nurcahyati, recently promoted Tanjung Lesung Economic Area as one of the top 10 tourism attractions in Indonesia. The stipulated area spreads from Tanjung Lesung beach to Ujung Kulon, where The Royale Krakatau Hotel Cilegon is located in between.

“Tanjung Lesung is a potential hinterland for the other tourist attraction whereabouts. Therefore, you can find various tourist attractions inside the area, some of them are beaches, falls, and hot springs,” said Eneng Nurcahyati.

Along with The 2017 Krakatau Granfondo event, Banten’s Tourism and Cultural Department wishes that the collaboration with PT Hiporia Event Management, Gowes Halus, and Road Bike Indonesia Community, will not only introduce, but also promote all tourism spots crossed by the participants. Eneng Nurcahyati added, “With this event, we also hope people around the world will know better about and be attracted to the Banten Seven Wonders that eventually they will add them to their travel bucket list. It will absolutely bring positive impact to the economy, especially for the local people in expanding entrepreneurship and Banten’s infrastructure as well.”

Translated as the “Big Ride”, the first Granfondo in the world was the Nove Colli held on July 12, 1970 in Cesenatico, Italy. The cycling event has been picking up popularity since the 1990s in North America, Asia, Australia and gradually, worldwide. “The first Granfondo was introduced in Italy, now we are bringing it to Banten in order to promote all tourist destinations in the area. With the support from the government, we believe this will give positive result in improving every economical sector in Banten,” stated Wildan Arief, Chief Committee and Founder of Gowes Halus (PT Krakatau Steel Cycling Community).

This event is expected to be a part of the strategy which aims to promote and brand Banten’s tourist destinations. The Royale Krakatau Hotel is a part of tourism development of PT Krakatau Industrial Estate Cilegon. The 2017 Krakatau Granfondo is listed in the Wonderful Indonesia Program and Exciting Banten by the Ministry of Tourism of Indonesia, and also a part of the Granfondo International program (www.granfondoguide.com).
