Sydney’s ‘secret’ national park, Dharawal National Park in the Macarthur region, will celebrate National Science Week (August 11-19) with a special guided tour, led by a geomorphologist, focussed on the Science of Managing Dharawal National Park.

Held on August 18, 2018, from 2pm to 3.30pm, the guided tour will take visitors to Minerva Pool, a pristine waterhole with a small stone island and a perfect spot to enjoy a view and watch the waterfall cascading into the rockpool below. Along the journey, Dr Rowena Morris, a geomorphologist who is also the local Dharawal ranger, will speak about the local environment, the science behind hazard reduction burning and the challenge of preserving nature while opening up the park to visitors and installing viewing platforms.

The track to Minerva Pools requires a standard level of fitness to complete and tour bookings are essential. Walkers are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes and a hat and bring a bottle of water.

The cost of the tour is $10 per person and it is 90 minutes in duration. Participants should arrive at the entrance to Dharawal National Park 15 minutes before the tour is scheduled to begin.

Located in the Macarthur region near Campbelltown, Dharawal National Park was declared in 2012 and boasts dramatic sandstone gorges, waterfalls, spectacular lookouts, waterholes and rock shelters.

Other tours of the National Park include guided, indigenous walking tours on the second Saturday of every month between February and November, with 9am walks being accessible to everyone, and the 11.30am walks taking a more challenging trail.
